Sango Safari Camp

OVERVIEW:

Sango Safari Camp is a small, good-value camp in the Khwai Concession, just outside the north-eastern boundaries of Moremi Game Reserve. Overlooking the beautiful Khwai river, this year-round water source allows the camp to offer both land and boating activities, and superb wildlife viewing is almost certain here. Simple, friendly, and no-frills, Sango is a good option for those seeking a more cost-effective way to explore the Okavango Delta while remaining faithful to the classic, back-to-nature safari style. Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and a laundry service. The camp is open year-round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Sango Safari Camp occupies a prime location on the Khwai river, which forms a natural border between Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai Concession. The camp is accessed by light aircraft to Khwai Airstrip (a 30-minute flight from Maun), followed by a 20-minute game drive transfer.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SANGO SAFARI CAMP:

Accommodation at Sango Safari Camp consists of six simple Meru-style guest tents raised slightly above ground level on wooden decking. Small verandas are set with a couple of safari chairs, and an explorer’s chest is used as a drinks table – a shady spot to relax and soak up the river and floodplain views. A timber-and-mesh door opens into the understated bedroom area with hardwood floors, where you’ll find a double bed or twin beds with mosquito netting, bedside tables, reading lights, a standing fan, a storage trunk, a wardrobe containing a digital safe, and bottled mineral water. Roll-up canvas windows allow airflow through the tents while keeping them nice and dark at night. The en-suite washroom is accessed through a doorway towards the back of the tent and comprises a flush toilet, a washstand and a basin, and, through another door, an open-air bucket shower. The camp supplies soap, body lotion, and washing powder for undergarments.

In amongst the trees, the canvas mess tent at Sango Safari Camp is approached from the guest tents along tidy sandy pathways and contains a comfortable open-plan lounge, dining area, and bar. The lounge is a cosy area to sit, enjoy a drink, or browse some of the camp’s reading material. Adjacent to this space is the dining area, where guests enjoy meals at the lovely, long communal table surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, and it’s also possible to dine al fresco around the adjacent fire-pit. A short distance from the mess tent, a fantastic viewing deck is elevated to maximise the gorgeous views across the Khwai Concession. You’ll find the camp’s plunge pool here, providing the perfect place to cool off in between activities while looking out for passing wildlife.

ACTIVITIES AT SANGO SAFARI CAMP:

Sango Safari Camp offers some terrific activities, with a strong focus on game drives and making the most of its excellent location for wildlife viewing. Please note that the minimum age requirement is 12 years for mokoro excursions and nature walks.

• Game drives

  – Khwai Private Reserve covers approximately 200,000 hectares of savanna, woodland, and waterways supporting abundant wildlife. Sango Safari Camp’s game drives occur within both Khwai and neighboring Moremi Game Reserve in the early morning and late afternoon. Full-day drives are available for those wanting to maximize their time in the bush. Look out for four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Smaller predators and herbivores in residence include cheetah, hyena, jackals, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, and a splendid variety of antelopes. 

• Night drives

  – Accompanied by your knowledgeable wildlife guide, head out after sunset in search of the reserve’s nocturnal species, including aardvark, aardwolf, porcupine, and the elusive pangolin.

• Bush walks

  – Bush walks are seasonal and depend on water levels and guide availability. However, when conditions permit, these provide a fascinating way to observe some of the Delta’s smaller wildlife treasures, including insects, lizards, plant life, and an exquisite array of birds.

• Mokoro excursions

  – The traditional mokoro is a dug-out canoe led by an experienced poler, ideal for enjoying the sounds and sights of Khwai river’s wildlife. The mokoro has no motor, so you drift along silently, enjoying close encounters with elephant, hippo, and a stunning variety of water birds.

• Village tours

  – Guests of Sango Safari Camp are invited to visit nearby Khwai village and experience the community’s welcoming hospitality. This is an amazing opportunity to engage with local people and learn about their age-old traditions and ways of life. 

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
