“Kalepo Camp is an exclusive-use hideaway offering total privacy and an incredible location overlooking a dry riverbed and a busy elephant watering hole. The camp blends adventure with serious comfort, and is ideal for families or groups looking to dive into Samburu culture and explore Lake Turkana and the Mathews Mountains.”

OVERVIEW:

Kalepo Camp is an exclusive-use bushcamp with remarkable views of northern Kenya’s remote Mathews Range. It’s located in a beautifully preserved forested area sacred to the Samburu people, and authentic cultural encounters are the beating heart of this experience. Kalepo Camp is ideal for travellers wishing to explore an unfrequented and exceptionally scenic part of Kenya, perhaps even venturing farther north by helicopter to Lake Turkana. A visit to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is also a highlight. Listen out for Samburu warriors singing, look out for dung beetles on a nature walk, or read a book by the pool accompanied by birdsong – this is all about ‘slow safari’. Kalepo Camp is booked exclusively, and rates include all meals, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, activities, and road transfers from Kalepo airstrip.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Kalepo Camp is located on 460,000 acres of private conservancy land overlooking the Mathews Range in northern Kenya’s Samburu region. Shaded by acacia trees on a dry riverbed, the camp is remote, isolated, and picturesque. Guests fly into Kalepo’s private airstrip, followed by a 20-minute road transfer to the camp. Road transfers from the airstrip are included in the rate.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KALEPO CAMP:

Accommodation at Kalepo Camp is booked on an exclusive-use basis and is currently able to sleep a maximum of 16 guests. There are three double/twin en-suite tents, which can accommodate children in extra camping beds, and a family unit consisting of two adjacent en-suite tents. A new tent is planned for the coming months, expanding the bed count. The canvas tents are simple but include all the comforts required for a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Zip-up mesh doors on all sides allow in plenty of light and welcome airflow. Inside, you’ll find a front-facing double bed so you’ll wake to gorgeous views, bedside tables with reading lamps and plug sockets, a ceiling fan, and a hanging storage area. Every bathroom is open to the elements and features a double basin, running water, a flush loo, and a hot shower.

The main area at Kalepo Camp is made up of a homely lounge and dining tent with an outdoor seating area and a small library pavilion. Adjacent to the mess tent, a lantern-lit campfire with cushioned seating provides a gathering place for morning coffee and pre-dinner drinks. The team can also arrange atmospheric bush dinners and starlit sundowners on the riverbed. The camp has a small plunge pool with an adjacent bar where guests can cool off with a refreshing drink while gazing at the mesmerising views. The food at Kalepo is excellent and relies mainly on home-grown ingredients.

ACTIVITIES AT KALEPO CAMP:

The Kalepo Camp ethos centres on the ‘slow safari’ concept, whereby guests are encouraged to connect with the natural environment and take each day at their own pace.

  • Bush walks

    – Walking is a particular highlight of this region, with its scenic trails, lush greenery, and dramatic views. You’ll cross dry riverbeds (luggas), encounter local Samburu villagers herding goats, and come across small details such as animal tracks, spoor, and dung beetles.
  • Warrior games

    – Marvel at Samburu warriors, known locally as ‘morans’, in their colourful regalia, and try your hand at some of their traditional games. Perhaps you’ll learn how to throw a traditional spear or see if you can outjump them!
  • Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

    – The Sanctuary is responsible for rescuing orphaned and abandoned elephants. Kalepo Camp is the perfect place to arrange a visit and learn about their valuable work.
  • Helicopter excursions

    – Soar high above the spectacular Mathews Range and take in the full scope of its mountains and valleys. Perhaps venture farther north to Lake Turkana, otherwise known as the ‘Jade Sea’, for a truly otherworldly adventure.
  • Samburu cultural visits

    – This area is the heartbeat of Samburu culture, and if you’re looking for authentic encounters, it is your place! Visit local villages, walk with herdsmen, and experience the ancient dry-season tradition of warriors singing as they dig for water.
