Recent travel experience

On her most recent trip, Heather travelled back to South Africa with friends and family from overseas, which gave her the chance to re-experience some of the country’s travel highlights through the eyes of a first-time visitor. Touching down in Cape Town, she enjoyed must-dos such as Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch, the V&A Waterfront, and the incredible food and wine of the Cape Winelands. Cape Town’s outdoors are unmissable, and Heather found herself paddling past seals (through rather choppy waters) in Hout Bay on a sea kayak trip and scaling the rocky paths of Lion’s Head on an early morning hike. This trip also took Heather back to her hometown of Durban in Kwa-Zulu Natal, to visit family and enjoy a mini safari adventure in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park. Here, a highlight was coming across a herd of 25+ elephants treating themselves to a mudbath for relief from the heat of the summer sun.

Heather's most memorable experience

“A real stand-out was seeing all of the Big Five on my very first night in Kruger. We started off with elephants ambling alongside the safari vehicle as the sun set, ended with two lions lounging in the middle of the dirt road leading back to the lodge, and ticked off rhino, buffalo, and a quick glimpse of a leopard in between. The group felt so lucky to have had these sightings on night one – it was almost surreal. Fortunately, we didn’t peak too early, and the rest of the trip had many more memorable game drives and fantastic wildlife viewing.”

Heather's biography

Born and raised in Durban, South Africa, by Scottish parents, Heather has grown up with a love of exploring her home country and the wider world. She studied Journalism at university and embarked on a backpacking gap year across Europe and Canada in 2016, before settling down to live and work in Cape Town for the next seven years. Curious to experience a different part of the world, she moved to London in 2023.

Heather started her career in the travel industry and has been working with words and wanderlust for nine years and counting. Her love of travel and stories has taken her to many incredible places around the globe, both personally and on work trips. Some of her favourite destinations are South-East Asia’s idyllic beaches, the remote Scottish Highlands, South Africa’s stunning Kruger National Park, Portugal’s rugged Algarve Coast, and the pristine shores of Lake Bled in Slovenia.

Working in travel means Heather’s bucket list is ever growing, and she is looking forward to discovering even more about the highlights and hidden gems of Safari Africa while working with Yellow Zebra.
