  • Temperatures remain high, including in coastal areas, but cool at night
  • It’s wet enough to have waterproofs on standby at all times, otherwise a mixture of layers

WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF VISITING KENYA IN MAY?

  • Due to all the rain, properties are quieter
  • Accommodation prices are at their lowest
  • The long rains make for fewer tourists on the whole
  • There’s very little dust about
  • This season appeals to safari aficionados, as spotting wildlife amidst tall grasses presents quite a challenge
  • Landscapes are at their greenest, with a lot of colourful flowers
  • The bush in green season, under skies in various greys, is a superb subject for photography

ANY LOWLIGHTS?

  • As we’re off season, some of Kenya’s properties are closed
  • Coastal regions aren’t recommended, due to high temperatures and heavy rainfall
  • It really is very wet, not a good month for sun worshippers
  • With so much water about, wildlife is dispersed throughout safari areas – and animals can be particularly difficult to find when they seek shelter from the rains
  • There are lots of mosquitoes
  • All the rain can cause tracks to become very muddy, making game drives tricky and sometimes impossible
