“Avondrood is one of our go-to properties for decent accommodation at a very competitive price. Located in the heart of Franschhoek, it has long been a favourite in the office here due to value and location alone. A charming little boutique property.”

OVERVIEW:

This is one of our favourite guesthouses in Franschhoek, offering high-quality accommodation and superb service! Perfect for couples and families alike.

Avondrood Guest House is privately owned and run. Manager and partner Justin has worked for over 15 years in Africa’s hospitality industry, so guests are in safe hands. The Victorian house was built during the 1870s, and in 2011 it was sympathetically and beautifully restored. Accommodation is booked on a B&B basis, including parking and Wi-Fi.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The guest house can be accessed via 75 kilometres’ road transfer from Cape Town. It’s situated just off the main street of Franschhoek, only a short stroll from restaurants, cafés, shops, museums, and more!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT AVONDROOD GUEST HOUSE:

There are eight rooms and suites, across four categories. All are individually and impeccably styled. Three rooms are branded Luxury. Each has a private entrance, and furnishings feature a king-size bed or twin beds (extra length), bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk cum vanity table and chair, a separate seating area, and ample storage space. Additional amenities include air conditioning, under-floor heating, satellite television, tea-and-coffee station, safe, hairdryer, bath sheets and pool towels, and a personalised beauty care range. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, washbasin with mirror over, step-up shower, and Victorian-style claw-foot bathtub. This option offers gorgeous garden views! There’s also one Deluxe Room. We don’t tend to recommend this option, as it faces the street and it doesn’t have a bath. However, it’s full of character, and it benefits from all the amenities of the Luxury Room. Three Luxury Suites are also available. These provide a larger lounge area, two with cosy fireplace. The suites known as Ndlovu and Le Rouge boast a private terrace apiece. Finally, there’s the Mountain View Suite, with two bedrooms, wood fireplace, private patio, and 360-degrees views of the Huguenot Mountains! This option can accommodate up to two adults and two children, so it’s highly recommended for family use. And all rooms and suites feature tasteful contemporary wall artworks.

The communal spaces at Avondrood Guest House are also very well appointed. In the lounge, well-cushioned sofas, armchairs, and pouffes are positioned around a grand stone fireplace. Occasional tables bear elegant lighting and fragrant fresh flowers, while the walls are adorned with more well-chosen artworks. This area is open plan to a dining room, where you’ll find separate and group table configurations. Avondrood’s bar is adjacent to the dining space, and it offers a great range of alcoholic and soft drinks. Outside, a breakfast veranda is the scenic setting for the first meal of the day, and the gardens are ideal for a serene stroll between trips into Franschhoek village and farther afield. They feature a heated Jacuzzi and a saltwater swimming pool, surrounded by inviting sunloungers, parasols, and a friendly red elephant sculpture.

ACTIVITIES AT AVONDROOD GUEST HOUSE:

Avondrood is perfectly positioned for guests to set out on foot to explore Franschhoek village. You could also consider a number of activities and experiences within the Winelands region. Here are a few things to see and do during your holiday:

  • Dining

    - Franschhoek is home to a number of outstanding restaurants and cafés, some of them among the finest in the world!
  • Art Galleries

    - Featuring the work of both local and South African artists, Franschhoek has really established itself as an art destination. A couple of our favourites are Galleria Gibello for wildlife photography and Art in the Yard for impressive new talent.
  • Museums

    - The village has a fascinating history, and it’s particularly well presented at the Huguenot Memorial exhibition.
  • Shops

    - It’s easy to while away an afternoon browsing Franschhoek’s lovely boutiques, in search for self-gifts and souvenirs!
  • Biking and hiking

    - See as much of the Franschhoek region as you wish from the saddle, or set out on foot along many of the area’s hiking trails.
  • Golf

    - The Winelands boasts an outstanding variety of courses, not least in Pearl Valley, which has hosted the South African Golf Championship for the past three years in a row.
  • Visit local wine estates

    - If you have time, you could consider taking trips out to estates such as Chamonix, Grande Provence, Mullineux & Leeu, and Rupert & Rothschild.
