Hidden in the rolling hills of south-western Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is a living, breathing time capsule – it’s one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and a sanctuary of stunning biodiversity. With its mist-draped canopy, ancient mahoganies, and echoing bird calls, Nyungwe is wild, alive, and feels deeply sacred.
This is Rwanda’s untamed heart, and a haven for 13 species of primates, including the charismatic and intelligent chimpanzees, the acrobatic Ruwenzori colobus, and the mischievous L’Hoest’s monkeys. Here, the thrill of the track is matched only by the awe of the encounter.
At dawn, you’ll set off with expert trackers into the cool stillness of the forest, eyes sharp, ears tuned to the distant whoop of a chimp call or the rustle of branches high in the trees. When you find them, whether it’s a curious chimp swinging effortlessly above you or a quiet colobus family nestled in the leaves, the experience is enthralling. It’s a window into a world we rarely see, and will never forget.
And it’s not just the primate species here to get excited about. The park is home to 85 mammal species, such as leopard, golden cat, serval, civets, genets, duikers, giant forest hog, white-bellied pangolin, and African giant squirrel. An amazing 275 bird varieties are also present, with special sightings such as red-winged francolin, yellow-whiskered greenbul, large blue turaco, and purple-breasted sunbird.
Nyungwe Forest is simply breathtaking, and the verdant forests hold something special around every corner. Chat with one of our Rwanda specialists for more information on one of our favourite destinations in Africa.
