The activities at Kitirua Plains Lodge include morning and afternoon game drives, Maasai community visits, and optional hot air balloon rides.
Morning and afternoon game drives introduce you to Amboseli’s incredible biodiversity, where giant elephant herds take pride of place. Additional sightings frequently include lion, cheetah, giraffe, buffalo, and lots of plains game including the unusual gerenuk. You may even cross paths with the odd hyena, jackal, and civet, too.
Kitirua Plains Lodge has a strong relationship with local Maasai communities, so you’ll be given a warm welcome during your stay. Accompanied by your guide, you can visit some of these communities and see A&K’s contribution to healthcare services, education, and community enterprise initiatives.
A hot air balloon flight over Amboseli is a stunning way to take in the views of both Mount Kilimanjaro and the plains below. This adventure begins at sunrise and ends with a delicious champagne breakfast before your safari activities continue. Please note that this activity incurs an additional cost.
Kitirua Plains Lodge is located on a private concession on the edge of Amboseli National Park. Access is by light aircraft, with a flight time of approximately 30 minutes from Nairobi to Amboseli Airstrip. This is followed by a 40-minute drive to the lodge.
The heart of Kitirua Plains is its open-fronted lounge and dining area, with an elegant bar for signature cocktails, and the Explorer’s Lounge, which features a map room full of archival maps, field guides, and regional artefacts.
Outside, the terrace is designed to take full advantage of the panoramic views, with Mount Kilimanjaro in the starring role. Dining is always enjoyable, including hearty breakfasts served at the lodge before safari activities begin, picnic-style lunches in the bush, and three-course à la carte dinners. There’s an open-air boma for fireside storytelling, and a weekly braai (barbecue) beneath the stars. Private dinners can also be arranged on the deck of your suite on request. For relaxation, the spa has both single and double treatment rooms, pedicure stations, and relaxation beds overlooking the plains. Fitness enthusiasts can also make use of the gym and the open-air yoga deck. Finally, the bush boutique sells locally crafted items, including artisanal jewellery and a selection of Kenyan keepsakes.
Kitirua Plains Lodge features 11 one-bedroom suites and two two-bedroom suites, accommodating up to 26 guests.
These can all be configured as doubles or twins, with the one-bedroom units positioned for picture-perfect views of Mount Kilimanjaro straight from the comfort of your bed. The lodge’s contemporary style incorporates jute, wicker, and stone, with locally made cotton throws and mango wood furniture. Further comforts include air-conditioning, Maasai-style ventilation screens, mosquito nets, a fully stocked mini-bar, and a tea-and-coffee station. Each en-suite bathroom also leaves no detail overlooked, with indoor and outdoor showers and a freestanding bathtub overlooking the grasslands. Glass doors open onto a private deck with a double daybed, ideal for an afternoon snooze or watching wildlife amble past. For families, the 2-bedroom suites overlook the plains and connect their en-suite bedrooms via a shared covered outdoor lounge and dining area.
