"Owned and run by pro guide Nick Murray, Vundu Camp was home to David Attenborough's team when they spent many months filming Dynasties. It is perfect for those looking for a traditional safari camp with phenomenal guiding."

OVERVIEW:

The camp is owned and operated by Nick Murray, a Pro-Zim guide with almost thirty years’ experience of guiding in the country. Since 1997, Nick has been based in Mana Pools.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Vundu Camp is situated among groves of riverine forest on the banks of the Zambezi River, in a private concession within Mana Pools National Park.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT VUNDU CAMP:

Vundu Camp is a very spacious camp. The main building is elevated above ground level to comprise a large deck with superb views across the river. On this deck, there is a large lounge area with plenty of comfortable seating and a small selection of reading material. There is also a dining area with a long table for communal meals, a bar, and a tea-and-coffee station that is available all day. Just outside the main building, beneath an ancient ebony tree, there is sandy terrain that provides a good spot for the camp’s fire, surrounded by chairs. And behind camp, there is a viewing platform positioned close to a waterhole – a great place to observe local wildlife!

Sandy paths through riverine forest connect the communal areas to the eight tented chalets, each with a wooden frame, concrete floor, canvas walls and a thatched roof. The family unit has a double bed and twin beds, the honeymoon suite a double bed, and the remainder either twin beds or a double bed. All have lounge furniture, rugs, a fan, and open-air en-suite facilities consisting of flush toilet, two washbasins and shower. The patterned clay washbasins are made by Nick Murray’s wife Desiree and add a lovely homely touch to the accommodation.

ACTIVITIES AT VUNDU CAMP:

Activities from Vundu benefit immensely from Nick’s expertise and that of the guides he picks himself, Zim-Pro freelancers based in the region.

  • Each day begins with a morning walk and/or game drive, following tracks that have appeared overnight or viewing the impressive game that inhabits Mana Pools. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, African wild dog, eland, kudu, waterbuck… there is a lot to see here!
  • Game drives take place during the afternoon too.
  • This is also the time to take a canoe trip down the Lower Zambezi, with an experienced guide on hand to negotiate the hippo and crocodile!
  • Canoe trails lasting two to three nights are available for enthusiasts – just contact us for details.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

An excellent safari camp run by Nick and Des Murray. Tents are very comfortable and spacious. Food is of a very good standard and plenty of it. Everyone eats and drinks together so there is a very friendly and sociable atmosphere. Mana Pools is a beautiful location and Vundu Camp is right on the banks of the Zambezi so sometimes the wildlife comes to the camp!. Overall though, wildlife is relatively limited in Mana Pools versus the diversity found in other parks. We saw many interesting bird species and large numbers of impala plus plenty of kudu and waterbuck. There's currently a pack of nine Wild Dogs but they can go missing for days so not guaranteed to see them. There's large numbers of elephants including some big tuskers and its great to be able to get close to them. Hippos and Crocs are abundant along the river and the pools. Lions, leopards and hyenas are around but based on our visit can be a little elusive, especially the latter two. Very glad to have had the chance to sit 20m from a pack of Wild dogs as they started to play in the late afternoon before going off to hunt which was a memorable experience. This was possible as Vundu's guides are able to take guests off the vehicles and approach many animals safely foot. To get the most out of your stay you probably need to consider going canoeing and / or fishing on the river in addition to the standard game drives due to the relatively limited diversity of wildlife. There's some great light for photos.

Excellent camp with great guides Nick, Mitch and Simeon who took us out tracking lions and elephants on foot. Very exciting! Also canoeing with hippos and fishing for tiger fish. Back in camp we were spoiled by Nikki and the amazing crew with wonderful meals. We had elephants, hyena and a lion come right into camp at night. This is the true Africa experience. Wonderful!
