"Baraza will always be one of my favorite lodges on Zanzibar. Not too big and not too small, excellent service and great standards of accommodation make Baraza very hard to beat."

OVERVIEW:

Baraza Resort & Spa is family owned and run. Boasting beautiful architecture, luxurious accommodation, and superb service, as well as offering numerous activities, it’s a contender for finest property on Zanzibar, in our view. Baraza has won a lot of awards, not least Traveler’s Choice 2018 from TripAdvisor! The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and Wi-Fi. A laundry service is available at extra cost. Baraza provides numerous special offers, such as Early Bird, Kids For Free, and honeymoon packages – please contact us for further information.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The resort is accessed via just over an hour’s road transfer from Zanzibar’s international airport, Abeid Amani Karume. Most travelers fly to the island from Dar es Salaam, which takes approximately 30 minutes. Baraza occupies a gorgeous stretch of white sands along the east coast’s world-renowned Michamvi Peninsula. This beach, Bwejuu Paje, has been included in Condé Nast’s Top 30 Beaches Worldwide!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT BARAZA RESORT & SPA:

Guest accommodation consists of 14 one-bedroom villas, 15 two-bedroom villas, and one royal beach villa with two bedrooms. All are very spacious, with the smallest option offering 148 square meters of floor space, the two-bed villa 193, and the royal beach villa a whopping 254! Every villa is beautifully designed and decorated, characterized by classic Swahili architecture such as smooth arches, cement benches, and ornate lanterns fixed to the walls. Within the one- and two-bed villa categories, guests can opt for either a garden or an ocean view. These types of villa differ only in terms of the number of bedrooms, as both provide master bedroom with en-suite facilities featuring freestanding bathtub, walk-in dressing room, lounge with television and DVD player, mini-bar area with additional tea-and-coffee station, and a pleasant terrace with a couple of sunloungers and your very own plunge pool! The two-bed villa’s second bedroom is also en suite, offering a well-appointed shower room. The royal beach villa has two master bedrooms with en-suite bathroom apiece, a central lounge with breathtaking seafront views, and a terrace with sun loungers and a large plunge pool. A theme of gold runs through all villa options, while the gardens in which they’re set are full of gorgeous green palm trees and lots of vibrant flowers.

Many of the communal spaces at Baraza also favor gold as the base color. The resort has a great range of lounges, restaurants, and bars. Breakfast is enjoyed at Livingstone Terrace, an open-air eatery serving breakfast every day and dinner on a few weeknights. Ocean Lounge is the place to go for light lunches, featuring Pizza of the Day and some specialty salads. The Sultan’s Dining Room offers delicious dinners, inspired by a number of cuisines – local, Arabic, Indian, Persian, and Swahili. Please note during dinner settings, gentlemen are required to dress in long trousers. And Dhahabu Bar & Lounge is the location for pre- and post-dinner drinks, including adventurous cocktails!

For a little relaxation and revitalization, you need only head to Baraza’s Frangipani Spa, where expertly trained staff provide a range of massages and other treatments. This venue has a lap pool too, as well as a well-equipped gym and a tennis court. The resort also has a general-use pool, and a shallow-depth children’s pool as part of its kids club facilities! Other attractions for the little ones include plenty of toys and games, and both babysitting and childminding are available at extra cost.

ACTIVITIES AT BARAZA RESORT & SPA:

Baraza provides an exciting variety of watersports and land-based activities!

  • Guests have access to the nearby Rising Sun Dive Centre, Zanzibar’s only PADI 5* Gold Palm and National Geographic Dive Centre. All levels of experience are accommodated, and instructors take out small groups of no more than six persons to explore the colorful coral reefs complete with intriguing marine life.
  • Lots of other watersports are available from the resort’s Water Club, which you’ll find on the beachfront.
  • The club offers plenty of things to do at both high and low tide.
  • At high tide, you can enjoy sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, and paddle boarding.
  • Low-tide pursuits include snorkeling trips, reef walking, football, volleyball, Frisbee tennis, and sandcastle building!
  • You can hire bikes too, and set off to explore the island.
  • And any guests who are interested in Swahili culture will love the Baraza Swahili Experience.
  • You could start by browsing the books on Zanzibar that are available from the resort’s library.
  • Swahili classes and lessons on the island’s history take place under palm trees, and there’s also the opportunity to try a little palm weaving on the beach!
  • Cooking classes can also be arranged, and staff members at Baraza’s Guest Relations Desk are happy to book you on to tours of the island and trips to local villages.

Our family of three (including our seven year old daughter) recently spent five days in Villa 18 (two bedroom Sultan Villa) at Baraza. The resort is absolutely beautiful and the service is excellent. Our villa was spacious and we loved the Arabic styling. It was truly an amazing place to spend the end of our safari vacation! A few points that come to mind: * Every day, after breakfast, we'd head to the pool to find the beds under cover (at the far end of the pool, featured in the photos) taken by other families who were, for the most part, missing. We spent the entire day by the pool one day and only one family was on and off of their bed, the other THREE BEDS had items on them but were never occupied. Other days we noticed the same thing. One day we were lucky enough to get a bed and the other beds were fully unoccupied the entire day, but personal items were left on them to "reserve" them and keep them from others! So rude! It's something you expect at a Mexican All Inclusive, but a resort of this caliber should accommodate all guests. When I brought this up to a staff member, they seemed unconcerned and just said that the beds were reserved by other guests. A reservation system should be put in place (with limitations so families can't reserve it for the entire week if demand is high, etc) or that staff must ensure that reserved beds don't go empty for a certain amount of time then that is what the resort should do to ensure that all guests get a chance to lounge in the "top spots" during their stay and if they aren't in use. (-1.0) * The food was excellent, but it would've been nice to have dinner start earlier than 7:30 and for it to go a bit quicker. Our daughter fell asleep at the table, literally, every night. An early dinner seating would be great for families! * My husband planned a Bush Dinner for my 40th Birthday and this is the way TO GO for a special occasion!!! It was so incredible! The service was excellent, the Birthday song and dance, it was private and I just can't say enough about it! So impressed, it literally made my day!!! (+1.0) * Communication could've been a little better. We had questions several times during our stay and the answers were always promised (they'd be right back with it) and repeatedly we had to initiate follow up. Not five star. (-1.0) * Our daughter contracted food poisoning towards the end of our trip which left us in the room, for nearly two days straight (-1.0) * The staff was very empathetic and we were able to get food delivered to our room at no additional charge, the offer of a doctor, and they did everything they possibly could to make the situation as good as it could possibly be considering the circumstances. The staff clearly understands that things happen and that the response is more important than the event itself sometimes. They never tried to pass of blame or do anything but apologize that she was so sick and offer any assistance that they could (+1.0) * Our flight departed Zanzibar at 7pm the day of our departure so we were very fortunate (especially considering that our daughter was still not 100%) that the resort could accommodate a very late checkout time of 4pm vs. the usual 10am. This courtesy went a very long way with us! (+1.0) * The drinks by the pool took F...O...R...E...V...E...R to be delivered. We waited 20 minutes once and finally left for our room. (-1.0) * The staff was amazing. We especially loved the restaurant manager (so sorry I didn't catch her name, but she was always present and really nice), Juliana in the restaurant, Evelyn our room assistant, Mar and Btawa. (+1.0)

Lovely hotel. The food was amazing and the two bedroom villa huge. Definitely one of the few hotels I would want to return to.
