"La Fontaine is a great property that ticks all the boxes in terms of value, location, service, and comfort. It does have quite an eclectic style, though, which can sometimes divide opinion!"

OVERVIEW:

La Fontaine Boutique Hotel is listed in the portfolio of The Oyster Collection, which at present comprises 11 high-quality properties in Franschhoek, Cape Town, and other destinations within South Africa. Family-owned and run, La Fontaine is one of the most luxurious offerings, especially following recent renovations! Accommodation is booked on a B&B basis, and the hotel is open all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The hotel can be accessed via road transfer from Cape Town or from any other location along the Garden Route. It’s situated just one block out of the center of Franschhoek, enjoying close proximity to the town’s thrilling range of eateries, shops, and other attractions.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT LA FONTAINE HOTEL:

Guest accommodation consists of 17 rooms and suites, across four categories. All options are individually and exquisitely styled. At entry level, there’s the Deluxe Room, featuring extra-length king-size bed, bedside lighting, a writing desk and chair, seating at the foot of the bed, and ample storage space. Additional amenities include air conditioning, LCD television, tea-and-coffee station, mini-bar, electronic safe, and hairdryer. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins, and shower. The Luxury Room benefits from all these features, and it’s slightly larger. The Luxury Suite is more spacious still, with a bigger writing desk and an en-suite full bathroom. Finally, there’s the Mountain View Suite, and one of the two units in this category has a cozy fireplace! And as the name suggests, both have amazing mountain vistas.

The newly renovated communal spaces at La Fontaine are also very well-styled. The lounge defines lavish, with its plush seating, colorful cushions, elegant lighting, and wealth of little details such as fresh flowers, ornate mirrors, and all sorts of paintings and sculptures on display. There’s even a grand fireplace, a welcome feature during the chillier months here! Guests can make use of the hotel’s library too, which is also very sumptuous and ideal for taking some quiet time. Additionally, there are two breakfast areas – indoors and al fresco. Your first meal of the day is served between 8:00 and 9:30, offered with delicious locally roasted coffee. You can relax on the hotel’s veranda, in the shade of pergolas strewn with wisterias and vines. The gardens provide a lovely setting for a wander in between trips into and around Franschhoek. They include two swimming pools, both with inviting sunloungers alongside!

ACTIVITIES AT LA FONTAINE HOTEL:

From this superb base, you can enjoy exploring Franschhoek and farther afield. Here are a few examples of things to do:

  • Dining in Franschhoek

    - As mentioned, Franschhoek boasts a number of eateries, many just a short distance from the hotel. The town is renowned for its world-class cuisine!
  • Art galleries

    - Showcasing the work of both local and South African artists, Franschhoek has really established itself as an art destination. A couple of our favorites are Galleria Gibello for wildlife photography and Art in the Yard for impressive new talent.
  • Museums

    - The town has a fascinating history, and it’s particularly well presented at the Huguenot Memorial exhibition.
  • Shopping in Franschhoek

    - It’s easy to while away an afternoon browsing Franschhoek’s lovely boutiques, in search for self-gifts and souvenirs alike!
  • Biking and hiking

    - See as much of the Franschhoek region as you wish from the saddle, or set out on foot along many of the area’s hiking trails.
  • Fishing

    - Head out to the Wemmers river, for trout fishing amidst spectacular scenery!
  • Golf

    - The Winelands boasts an outstanding variety of courses, not least in Pearl Valley, which has hosted the South African Golf Championship for the past three years in a row.
  • Visit local wine estates

    - If you have time, you could consider taking trips out to estates such as Chamonix, Grande Provence, Mullineux & Leeu, and Rupert & Rothschild.

We stayed in the Moutain View Suite and it was perfect! The bed was comfortable, the room clean, a large and luxurious bathroom, and, as the name indicates, a fantastic view of the mountain range. The lodge was only 1 block from the main street in Franschhoek and was an easy walk to all main attractions. Despite this proximity, the room was quiet and peaceful at night. Breakfast was excellent and the lounge was very comfortable, although we didn't spend much time there due to COVID and generally wanting to experience the area. The staff is what truly sets La Fontaine apart! We were greeted with a warm smile and phenomenal customer service when we arrived. Unfamiliar with the area, we asked for dinner recommendations and the gentleman who checked us in (apologies for not recalling his name!) gave us 3 options and then offered to call to make the reservation for us once we selected a restaurant. The next morning, I mentioned to Kim that we wanted to make a last-minute reservation for the wine tram (highly recommend) and she brought out a schedule and took the time to describe each winery and recommend 4 that we should visit because I told her that I didn't want to visit every winery on the tour. She then offered to drive us to the departure terminal and even stood in line with us to make sure we bought the correct tickets! Despite probably being an obvious inconvenience to her, Kim made is seem like we were doing her a favor to help us! We also thoroughly enjoyed the Charlotte Rhys bath products used by La Fontaine so much that Kim sold us 4 containers of soap and hand lotion so we wouldn't have to track them down as they are not sold in the United States online (or, at least I wasn't able to easily find them). When it was time to leave, we were running a few minutes late and they were so gracious to offer our transfer driver coffee and invited her to wait for us in the lounge. Like I said, the room was excellent and so was breakfast, but the customer service we received is what made our stay truly special. Thank you.

There are no words to describe how amazing our experience was at La Fontaine. My wife was sick while we were there and the staff helped point us in the right direction for medication, and genuinely cared about her well-being, asking about her and making sure she was as comfortable as possible. We had great dinner and vineyard recommendations and reservations provided by them, and the in-house food was lovely as well. We purchased a quantity of wine and some souvenirs from vineyards and shops in town, and Kim at La Fontaine not just walked us through how to get it home to the states, but physically gathered our goods and coordinated with the courier to get it done. When the courier began causing trouble, she continued to help us - weeks after our stay had ended. This isn't service I have ever received from a hotel before, or would ever reasonably expect, no matter the price paid. I have simply never in my life had a better hotel experience than La Fontaine - Kim is simply tops in the business, and La Fontaine should know how fortunate they are to have her on their staff.
