"With a wonderfully quiet location away from the busier game-drive areas of the Mara itself, Sala's is a YZ favorite and a camp that offers very high standards across the board. Expensive, but savings are possible when combined with its sister camps."

OVERVIEW:

Sala’s Camp is a YZ favorite, due to its superb location, great range of activities, and laidback atmosphere. A particular highlight is the candlelit dinner under the stars on the bed of the Sand River! The camp is owned and operated by The Safari Collection, a company that prides itself on offering each guest unique experiences and a personalized stay.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

It is situated in the far south, close to the Kenya–Tanzania border and where the Sand River meets the Keekerok River.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SALA'S CAMP:

Sala’s has a lot of character and a lovely laidback atmosphere. The main mess tent contains a lounge, a dining area and a small bar. The lounge has a very modern and African feel, featuring vibrantly colored cushions on wicker seating. It has a selection of books and a few games too. The dining area has a long table for communal meals and is separated from the lounge by the bar. Just in front of the mess tent, there are directors’ chairs and coffee tables to create another space for socializing. The fire pit is also a great place to enjoy a drink and swap stories!

The guest accommodation at Sala’s consists of seven luxurious and tasteful tents, with running water and electricity. One of the tents is slightly larger, with an additional lounge/bedroom, and is available to honeymooners or families. All are spacious, while the thick foliage around the camp guarantees privacy and shade in the heat of the day. The tents are constructed from a forest-green colored canvas, while inside the décor is cool and contemporary, featuring African throws, silken cushions and crisp white sheets! Furnishings include a wardrobe and a writing desk. The sleeping area also contains a sink unit, with a shower room (flush toilet and hot-and-cold running shower) situated behind a canvas door. At the front of each tent, deckchairs are set out to provide a comfortable seating area.

*Please be aware that the swimming pool here has no depth markings, so take care before you jump in

 ACTIVITIES AT SALA'S CAMP:

  • Sala’s fabulous location results in some awesome game drives! In this relatively quiet region of the reserve, there are fewer crowds and vehicles. The camp is one of the first in the reserve to witness the arrival of the Great Migration herds as they hurtle into Kenya from the Serengeti from June to September every year.
  • Throughout the reserve, there is excellent game viewing – all Big Five animals in addition to many other predators and herbivores! The birdlife is nothing short of thrilling, with numerous species of raptors and waterfowl present all year round.
  • The camp also offers hot air balloon rides and even some sports when the nearby river is reasonably shallow. In fact, the Sand River is a fantastic feature at Sala’s. Situated just below the mess tent, it has a sandy bottom, providing the impression of being on the beach! There are no crocs here, so it is a perfect place for children to play while a Maasai askari (guard) keeps watch. Everyone can enjoy a bit of exercise by playing football, frisbee and volleyball – and the staff love to join in too!
  • There is a great children’s program at Sala’s. All kids receive a pack including games, activities and quizzes about wildlife and about the camp. It contains gifts for them too! There is also warrior training – while the parents relax in the afternoon, children spend their time learning how to make bows and arrows, how to make stones sing, and how to make fire the traditional way while wearing Maasai clothing and jewelry. Nature walks encourage kids to have fun hunting the ‘Small Five’ with their guide, and entertainment is available before and after dinner in the form of roasting marshmallows and making popcorn on the campfire. The camp is well stocked with children’s games and all rooms have a set of paints and paper for budding artists!
  • Other activities include croquet on the grass in front of the mess tent and Spanish bocce for playing in the Sand River.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Our stay at Sala’s Camp was truly unforgettable. From the moment we drove up and caught that first glimpse of the tents set against the backdrop of the rushing river, it felt like something out of a dream. The camp itself is beautiful, but what really made the experience exceptional was the people. Every single team member was kind, welcoming, and genuinely invested in making our stay special. They took the time to understand what we hoped to see and went above and beyond to help us find even the most elusive animals on our wish list. I know they welcome new guests every few days, but we never once felt like just another group passing through. Having a spotter with us in the vehicle and an incredibly knowledgeable driver and guide ensured we were first on site for nearly every experience, which made each sighting feel even more special and intimate. Seeing all of the big cats, along with so many rare and hard-to-spot creatures, was incredible. Each game drive felt thoughtfully planned, with vehicles that were always spotless and ready for us. The little details made a big difference too. Personalized water bottles, cozy blankets, rain jackets and ponchos, and warm drinks like hot chocolate or coffee waiting for us during those chilly early mornings and evenings. There were always plenty of refreshments to keep us comfortable throughout the day. Everything about the experience felt curated, intentional, and deeply personal. It was truly a privilege to spend time here and to get to know the amazing people who make Sala’s Camp so special.

Just returned from 5 nights stay at Salas camp Kenya. Our driver and spotter were fabulous and nothing was too much trouble for them going above and beyond to ensure that we got to see as many animals as possible. The staff at the camp were brilliant, attentive and always on hand to ensure our stay was perfect. The accommodation was clean and well appointed. The food was of a very high quality. Above all there was nothing I would change, nothing could have been improved on. A place I would highly recommend.

Good service and fantastic food. The only negative was the low water pressure in the shower which made it difficult to rinse off the soap. The shower floor was also dark in areas from what looked like built up mildew.

The Sala’s Camp was beyond our expectations. Everyone from camp management to the guide, tracker and service people put in the extra effort to make our stay enjoyable. The food and wine was superb. Lions walking by our tent in the middle of the night gave a new meaning to thrilling.

FABULOUS! There is nothing like falling asleep to the sounds of lions, elephants, hippos, baboons, etc. in the distance...and some close by too! The tents are incredible, each with their own refreshing pool to take a dip in after a long game drive. The food was amazing and the staff went above and beyond to ensure that you were happy. The guides were extremely knowledgable and the spotters were excellent. The vehicles were comfortable, always fully stocked with drinks, bug spray, sunscreen, tissues, etc. and we enjoyed a wonderful (hot!) breakfast in the bush one morning and sunset drinks as well too! Exceptional service and friendly staff. Thank you Weez and team! Sala's did not disappoint!
