Tipping in Africa

Tipping is commonplace across Africa and it's a good idea to keep a supply of small bills with you (either in US Dollars or the local currency).

Tipping is not included in the cost of your trip and below are suggested tipping amounts, but you may decide to tip less or more, depending on the level of service you receive. Likewise, a lodge may advise of their own suggested tipping amount locally, which may differ slightly from our own recommendation. Tipping is usually preferred in cash and always done at the end of a stay at each camp, not during.

Amounts shown in US$ and South African Rand (for South Africa & Namibia):

  • US$15 / R200 per person per day to your ranger/guide during safari
  • US$10 / R150 per person per day to your tracker/spotter during safari (Southern Africa only)
  • US$10 / R150 total tip per day per person for the safari lodge communal tip box – this covers all the people behind the scenes
  • US$1 / R10 per piece of luggage for porters at airports
  • US$2 / R20 per porter service at city and beach hotels
  • US$15 / R200 per person per full day for a sightseeing guide (e.g. city tour)
  • US$5 / R50 per person per transfer for a transfer driver (e.g. city tour)
