Imagine the architects were giant termites and the interior designers were the Flintstones, and you’ll have some idea of this unique and fascinating lodge in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park.   • The house has spectacular views of the dramatic mountainous escarpment beyond the river. Many animals can be seen from the deck, including elephants crossing the river, and species such as kudu and Impala coming down to the river to drink.

Access & Location

Chongwe River House sits on the banks of the Chongwe River, which borders Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park. Chongwe House is a 40 minute helicopter transfer from Lusaka. The flight includes a stunning drinks stop on top of the escarpment before carrying onto camp.

The design of the house is extremely unusual.

The entire house has been built around a frame of wild wood, with Ferro walls following the contours of the branches. Colored pebbles from the river decorate the ceilings. Celebrating the outstanding natural setting, there is a large swimming pool, an outdoor lounge, plus a boma area and outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and open-flame barbecue.

Across two stories, there are four bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom.

With double and twin bed configurations, the bedrooms lead on to absolutely stunning indoor and outdoor bathrooms. Water pours through the stone ceiling in the upstairs showers, without the normal central rose, while the downstairs showers are waterfalls. There are also private open-air bathtubs. The taps are made of wood and bone while the basins have been beautifully carved from wood and marble by the Zambian artist, Eddie Mumba.
