"Wow, wow, and more wow! Ikuka has amazing views across Ruaha, is very well run, and is literally the owner's home. In short, I cannot recommend this camp enough. The newcomer on the scene for sure, but an outstanding property."

Ikuka Safari Camp is owned and run by safari experts Mark and Chloe Sheridan Johnson, together with a top-notch team. If you are looking for a sumptuous safari camp from which to explore the wonderfully remote Ruaha, Ikuka is well worth considering.

Built high on the escarpment in Tanzania's Ruaha National Park.

The communal areas are very well appointed. Wood-and-thatch structures house a spacious lounge with comfy sofas and a dining area featuring elegant furniture and a telescope! There is also a library, for reading and relaxation, in addition to a well-stocked bar. The camp’s swimming pool is positioned within a lounging deck, so you can chill out both in and out of the water! All areas provide those spectacular views of the wilderness, mile upon mile of bushscape towards the mountains beyond.

Ikuka’s guest accommodation are pretty special too! There are just seven luxurious rooms and it is clear that a lot of thought has gone into the design. Each is raised above ground level, to maximise views over Ruaha. There is a lovely veranda, complete with a couple of chairs and a coffee table – this space flows through into the bedroom. Long curtains keep out the heat when necessary, while a king-size bed looks suitably comfortable! En-suite facilities include flush toilet and twin washbasins.

  • Mark is a qualified safari guide. He leads some seriously impressive game drives and walks in the area, including close to the Mwagusi River, one of Ruaha’s particularly wildlife-rich regions!
  • Ruaha National Park is a YZ favourite for great game viewing – and Ikuka is sure to provide top-quality game drives and walking safaris.
  • The Mwagusi River, just 20 minutes from camp, attracts loads of predators and herbivores!
  • And the sheer diversity of landscapes within the park guarantees a great variety of wildlife.
  • Sprawling savanna, big baobabs, brachystegia woodlands, lofty kopjes, a network of waterways including the Great Ruaha River… all these and more are home to such species as lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, antelopes, hyenas, jackals, wild dog, and hippo.
  • The birdlife deserves a mention too, as almost six hundred types of feathery friends have been spotted here!
  • Eagles, ospreys, herons, pelicans, ducks, geese, bee-eaters, guineafowls… remember to pack your binoculars if birdwatching appeals.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

YZ clients Rick and Dorothy F. just returned from safari to Tanzania, where they explored paths less travelled in the Southern Circuit of the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park.
