When To Visit Sabi Sand Reserves:

Currently being refurbished: Mala Mala is a private reserve in a phenomenally good game-viewing area – an area that we believe is one of the very best in Africa.

Mala Mala Main Camp and Sable were both built in the 1960s, so they do not begin to compare with some of the newer, ultra-luxurious camps. However, the accommodation and hospitality is not what you come here for. If you are looking for pampering and the lap of luxury, this place is not for you; however, if you are looking for some of the best big-game viewing in the world, then Mala Mala is as good as it gets.

Located on the border of South Africa’s Sabi Sands and Kruger National Park, Mala Mala is outstanding in several ways. It is much the largest of the Sabi Sands Reserves. In our opinion, it is the very best in the area, by quite a long way. And considering the competition here, that’s saying something. Mala Mala Main Camp is set in unfenced lush gardens with views of the bushveld and the Sand River.

The 14 spacious chalets have thatched roofs. They are simple and unpretentious but have everything you need, including ensuite bathrooms and air-conditioning. Dinner is taken outside in a reed-enclosed boma.

Mala Mala Sable Camp is smaller and more intimate, accommodating 14 guests in five chalets and a family chalet called the Lion Den. The camp is slightly elevated, giving lovely views of the Sand River. It is more luxurious than Main Camp and is decorated in ‘Afro-colonial chic’.

Not only does it offer its guests the largest game-viewing area, but it also has by far the largest border with the Kruger National Park itself – something that guarantees good game. It also has the largest river section of any private reserve. This is particularly important as game-viewing, especially in the dry season, is dependent on the river. This all combines to make Mala Mala rather special for game-viewing!
