Sossusvlei has a number of different lodges spread across different price brackets, but Kulala Desert Lodge is the first place we'd suggest you look at. This stone and thatch lodge has the best views of the dunes of any camp in the area, and also offers a good price, considering its private reserve location. A recent refurbishment has also raised the standard of the entire camp.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
The wilderness reserve has the only private entrance into Sossusvlei, giving this camp the advantage of avoiding the crowds that enter through the park's main entrance.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KULALA DESERT LODGE:
With 23 rooms, Kulala Desert Lodge is larger and less luxurious than its sister lodge, Little Kulala. In our view, the price and the fantastic dune location are the main reasons for staying here.
Each room is built on a wooden platform and offers a flat rooftop for sleep-outs under the stars. The main guest areas include a dining area that extends outdoors, a cosy lounge with an open fireplace, a swimming pool, and a wraparound veranda overlooking a waterhole. The buildings at Kulala Desert Lodge are clay buildings with high thatched ceilings, constructed in a traditional African style.
ACTIVITIES AT KULALA DESERT LODGE:
Activities include trips into Sossusvlei and up the huge dunes. At Kulala Desert Lodge, you can go on guided electric powered fat bike excursions (subject to availability), while the wilderness reserve also offers game drives as well as a number of superb walking areas. However, travellers should be reminded that this is far from a big game area, so drives tend to be about the minutia as opposed to Africa’s big game.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course
