"One of Africa's most famous camps and a property that now competes with the absolute top end of the safari market. The lion density is not nearly as high at Duba nowadays, but this is a top property nonetheless."

OVERVIEW:

Duba Plains Camp is an all-time favourite of YZ. We have been big fans of this camp since its early days – and now that it has been re-designed, we love it just as much as ever! Owned by Great Plains Conservation, Duba takes pride of place in an impressive portfolio that includes sister camps Selinda and Zarafa.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is situated within a private concession of over 30,000 hectares within the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta. It is accessible via aircraft flight, either scheduled or by private charter. Once you have arrived, a short road trip lasting just 7 minutes completes your journey.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT DUBA PLAINS CAMP:

The communal lodge is raised above the waters of the Delta on wooden stilts and is surrounded by tall trees that provide plenty of cooling shade. It is open sided too, providing breathtaking views. The lounge contains comfortable chairs and sofas around a coffee table, and adjoins the library, the indoor dining area, and the wine cellar too – the cellar boasts hundreds of bottles! There are also outdoor dining areas, and it is wonderful to enjoy a meal while marvelling at the Delta’s beautiful scenery. The lodge’s decking extends over the water to create a fantastic fire-pit space. This is the best place for gathering with fellow travellers and swapping your safari stories!

Guest accommodation at Duba Plains consists of five tented rooms and one two-bedroom suite. All are traditional in style, and positioned on raised railway sleeper decking. Inside each tent, there is a double bed or twin beds, a lounge area, a table and chair, and en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, twin washbasins, a bath, and indoor and outdoor showers. An environmentally friendly air conditioning system and ceiling fans are in place to keep you cool. The external decking incorporates a private veranda with rest area and plunge pool. Views over the floodplain are spectacular, and you can look out for the local wildlife too! The suite benefits from all the features of the tented rooms and an additional bedroom, and if you book this option you also have access to a private vehicle for game drives as well as a private butler and chef!

ACTIVITIES AT DUBA PLAINS CAMP:

Activities from Duba Plains are focused on game drives, taking place in the early morning and late afternoon into early evening too.

  • This part of the Delta is incredibly good for game viewing. All Big Five are in residence, along with countless other species – cheetah, zebra, giraffe, hyena, warthog, kudu, impala, tsessebe, red lechwe!
  • Birding is brilliant too, featuring such highlights as bee-eaters, bustards, cormorants, eagles, egrets, herons, and kingfishers.
  • The later drives may not be possible when water levels are high, usually from May to September. However, if you come during these months you are guaranteed great boating – oodles of opportunities to check out crocs and hippos! The quality of safari on offer here is exceptionally good, combining with Great Plains’ passion for conservation to provide an all-round excellent experience.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
