Kenya Solo Safari Vacations
Kenya is the perfect place for adventurous solo explorers. The properties we consider especially suitable for singles are located in the Maasai Mara National Reserve conservancies and Laikipia county.
Both areas are chock-full of wildlife all year round! The Maasai Mara is at its most spectacular from July to October, when it hosts the famous Great Migration, but it is worth visiting during all the other months due to astonishing numbers of predators and herbivores. Laikipia is a Yellow Zebra favourite not only for all the animals, but also for its stunning scenery!
Mara Conservancies
Staying in the Mara Conservancies brings you the best of both worlds – an area in which to enjoy great game drives and walking safaris, plus all the thrills of game drives in the busy Maasai Mara National Reserve! Typically travellers ride out into the Reserve for a full day of wildlife watching, complete with picnic lunch, while Conservancy drives are enjoyed as half-day excursions. We advise spending as much time as possible on safari!
Angama Mara
The first property to mention in the Mara Conservancies is Angama Mara, two camps in one, perched high above the plains on a couple of rock kopjes. Angama describes itself as single traveller friendly – the first two single rooms in any booking are not charged a single supplement and subsequently 50 per cent of the nightly rate is levied. Each camp has 15 suites with floor-to-glass windows to maximize those amazing views! Activities are organized according to how guests would like to spend their time. You can also decide how far out you would like to travel – the guides are happy to stay close to camp or drive as far as the Tanzanian border! Walking safaris are available too, while hot air balloon rides are an exhilarating way of viewing the Mara’s wildlife. There are even some opportunities to take in a little culture, in the form of village tours. Angama Mara is one of the newest offerings in Mara Conservancies and already it has received rave reviews!
Offbeat Mara and Kicheche Mara
Two other properties worth visiting in this part of Kenya are Offbeat Mara and Kicheche Mara, both based in the Mara North Conservancy. Offbeat waives all single room supplements for one single guest per group, all year round. Offbeat has just six classic tents, while Kicheche has eight. Both camps offer some superb safari activities. At Offbeat, you can enjoy game drives and walks in the company of very knowledgeable local Maasai guides. Kicheche is renowned for its flexible approach – you can say how much time you would like to spend on safari. Offbeat also arranges scenic flights and hot air balloon rides. Kicheche can organize balloon safaris too, and if you are staying for more than a couple of nights here you can trek out to the property’s fly camp! Both camps provide opportunities to take in a little culture, in the form of trips to the local village.
Kicheche Laikipia
Moving to Laikipia, we find another Kicheche property – Kicheche Laikipia. There are six tented rooms at this camp, all very comfortably furnished. The camp is situated within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a part of the county that boasts a breathtaking wealth of wildlife! Activities include day and night game drives, game walks, and tracking lion with the latest technology. Excursions to the local chimpanzee sanctuary and white rhino sanctuary are also possible. You can go canoeing, hiking, and biking too!
Sosian Lodge
Finally, there is Sosian Lodge, a thriving cattle ranch in the foothills of Mount Kenya. Here, no single supplement is imposed on solo travellers. There are seven rooms in total, all within two characterful cottages along the Lodge’s lawn. The ranch contains loads of predators and herbivores alike! Game drives are available by day and by night and walking safaris bring you close to plants, birds, and insects. Tracking lion and wild dog makes for a very exciting adventure, while horse and camel safaris are a wonderful way to check out the wildlife from an alternative perspective. You can head out to the Lodge’s fly camp, spend some time messing about on the Ewaso Narok River, visit the local village to watch fire making and dancing, and enjoy a tour of the ranch by Sean the General Manager.
