Game drives, walking safaris, cheetah research, and a photographic vehicle

I truly believe there’s no better exclusive-use villa in this part of the Serengeti – and arguably anywhere in the National Park. What I love most about The Retreat at Namiri Plains is how it captures Asilia’s effortless yet refined hospitality, paired with a quiet sophistication that feels completely at home in one of East Africa’s most remote and wild landscapes.

  • Morning and afternoon game drives take place in private safari vehicles with your own dedicated wildlife guide for maximum flexibility. Explore the Serengeti plains at your own pace, looking out for big cats, including cheetah, leopard, and lion, besides an abundance of plains game. Between October and May, you might witness the herds of the Great Migration as they pass through camp during their journey south. You can also opt for a full-day game drive to the southern Serengeti, accompanied by a picnic lunch.

  • Led by professional guides and armed rangers, walking safaris allow guests to experience the Serengeti up close, taking in the tiniest details of the ecosystem. On high alert for any sign of movement, you’ll listen out for the snap of a branch, scout the ground for fresh tracks, hear distant animal calls, and identify resident and migratory birds. This is such a special way to enjoy the landscape, and your guide will really bring the Serengeti to life as you explore on foot. Please note that the minimum age for walking safaris is 12 years.

  • This is a unique opportunity to spend an educational evening with the Namiri Plains resident cheetah researcher, and donate to the Serengeti Cheetah Project if you wish. Part of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), this project monitors fluctuations in cheetah birth and survival rates and provides valuable insights into the challenges facing their population here. Please note that there is an additional charge for this activity.

  • Wildlife photographers can book specially modified photographic vehicles, enabling them to shoot at eye level with wildlife. You’ll find all the gear needed to ensure fantastic wildlife shots, from beanbags and camera rests to 360 degree swivel seats. Please enquire in advance for availability.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
