Known locally as “wansalishi”, meaning “the pioneer” in Swahili, Beho Beho was the first permanent camp in the northern sector of Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), and remains one of the best places to stay in the area. Its hillside location offers uninterrupted views across the Kipalala Valley, a defining feature that runs throughout the property. Beho Beho is a homely, laidback spot where locally sourced materials such as stone and palm thatch are incorporated into the style, and hosted meals are enjoyed communally. Days are spent between game drives, walking safaris, and boating excursions on Lake Tagalala, ensuring a well-rounded experience of Tanzania’s largest national park. Do note that Beho Beho is closed from 14 March to 1 June each year, during the long rains.

Our Yellow Zebra Opinion
  • Best in class
Family-run and expertly managed, Beho Beho is a real gem of Nyerere! Famed for its walking safaris and social atmosphere, it’s direct competition to the earthier Sand Rivers, with a more vibrant and luxurious feel.

Activities

The activities at Beho Beho are centred on game drives and walking safaris in Nyerere National Park, as well as a boat excursion on Lake Tagalala.

Game drives

Walking safaris

Lake Tagalala boat excursions

  • Game drives take place in the early mornings or late afternoons, in open-sided 4WD vehicles. You’ll have the opportunity to encounter elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, impala, giraffe, wild dog, warthog, hippo, baboon, and hyena, as well as the park’s incredibly diverse bird and plant life. Unlike the much-frequented northern circuit, Nyerere is remote and receives far fewer visitors, so you’ll barely see another vehicle while on safari here! Please note that guests are not allocated a single guide, nor are private vehicles offered (unless you’re staying at the owner’s house). Instead, you’ll have the opportunity to be guided by several different highly trained professional guides during your stay.

  • Walking safaris depart straight from camp, accompanied by armed guides, and last between 2 and 5 hours depending on conditions. These are a real highlight of the Beho Beho experience, as you’ll get to slow down and appreciate the scale and diversity of Nyerere National Park, with its plains, miombo woodlands, and riverine forests. Besides close encounters with larger animals, there’s a spectacular array of birdlife to discover year-round. Breakfast is often served outside in the bush during the morning activity and is hosted by your guide. Walking boots aren’t necessary, but bring sensible shoes and a sun hat!

  • All guests can take part in a Lake Tagalala excursion during their stay. This experience begins with a 45-minute drive (possibly longer depending on what you see en route), followed by a leisurely boat trip on the lake. Frequent sightings include hippos, crocodiles, and plenty of water birds. Breakfast is enjoyed communally on the lakeshore.

The open design maximises views across the Kipalala Valley, extending to the pool terrace where guests can relax on sunloungers between game drives and walking safaris. A shaded pool house provides another comfortable spot for a cold drink in the hotter hours. All meals in the main camp are communal and family-style, hosted by the guides and managers, with breakfast usually enjoyed outdoors in the bush during morning game-viewing activities. Please note that private dining is not available in the main camp, as this is exclusively reserved for guests staying at Bailey’s Banda.

Each of these can be configured as a double or twin, and some can accommodate additional beds on request. Airy and spacious, these are furnished with king-sized beds and protective mosquito nets, Zanzibari daybeds, writing desks, Persian-style carpets, and comfy armchairs. The adventurous will feel right at home with the front of each banda fully open to the elements, leading to a veranda that can be closed off at night with tented curtains. Here, you have your own private plunge pool, a sun deck, and a tripod-mounted telescope for game viewing. Separate dressing rooms lead to the en-suite bathrooms, complete with twin basins and open-air showers.

Bailey’s Banda is the owner’s private villa, set higher up above the main camp, with spectacular views of the valley and across the hippo pools. Accommodating up to five guests, the house comes with two en-suite bedrooms, including a main bedroom with a king-sized bed on the first floor, and a twin at ground level. There are open-plan living and dining areas, a kitchen with a resident chef, and a sundeck with a private plunge pool. Bailey’s Banda also comes with a dedicated 4WD safari vehicle and private guides.
