There’s nothing that allows you to experience Africa at its authentic best quite like fly camping.

It strips everything back to the bare basics and will create a connection to the surrounding wild landscape like you’ve never experienced before.

Fly camping is a unique safari experience in which you sleep under a mosquito net or boma-type enclosure away from your main lodge. You’ll experience the Milky Way and Kenya’s wild side in a way that is almost impossible to top.

Where to experience fly camping in Kenya

Fly Camping, Laikipia, Laikipia Wilderness, Kenya

The style of fly camping you’ll experience is completely dependent on the lodge that you are staying at, but we’re big fans of the fly camping on offer at Laikipia Wilderness Camp, Sarara Camp in the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, and Sosian Lodge in the foothills of Mount Kenya.

What to expect when fly camping?

While itineraries will vary, you can expect to head out to your fly camp just before sundown, on foot or by vehicle, with your experienced guide. Your ‘accommodation’ will be set up for you, so this is your chance to relax around the campfire and enjoy a couple of sundowners. You’ll then be treated to a sumptuous campfire-cooked meal under the stars. Your guide will point out the different nocturnal animal noises that start to come alive around you, and you’ll fall asleep listening to the heartbeat of authentic Africa, watched over by resplendent stars like you’ve never seen before. You’ll be up at dawn to witness daybreak in the wilderness and be greeted with a delicious cup of campfire-brewed coffee as you listen to Africa wake up around you.

Fly camping certainly isn’t for everyone as it does lack a sense of luxury and creature comforts. However, for the more adventurous traveler, this experience can’t be beaten.
