Our Yellow Zebra Opinion
  • Well-loved lodge
Engagi is a solid accommodation option on the Buhoma side of Bwindi. It’s not a property that we book often, but we will happily make use of it when other options in this area are unavailable.

  • From this comfortable base, guests can head out on gorilla treks! The starting point for treks is just over 1 kilometre from camp. The length of treks varies according to where the gorillas are situated, and if they are high in the mountains of Bwindi you will be in for a steep climb! However, the effort is worth the experience of observing the gorillas in their natural habitat – feeding, drinking, at rest, and at play.

  • Engagi offers other walks too, for example from the lodge down to the River Munyaga, which is a great opportunity to check out all the other wildlife in this spectacular part of the world.

  • And travellers who like to take in a little culture while on holiday will love visiting a local tea farm!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

In fact, all of these materials have been sourced locally, so the lodge blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Inside, there is a pleasant lounge/bar, featuring sumptuous seating, elegant little coffee tables, a line of padded stools along the bar area, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The dining room, which adjoins this space, has smartly presented tables and flows out on to a dining deck. Here, you can relax and marvel at views of the forest!

Amenities

Forest views are also enjoyed from each of Engagi’s eight en-suite cottages, dotted around the grounds.

A private veranda entices guests to gaze out over the canopy! The interior of each cottage is spacious and comfy, featuring a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, and en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, washbasin, and walk-in shower. The cottages have been built using the same materials as the communal building – eucalyptus trees, rocks found in the area, and banana-fibre thatch. Wood-burning boilers provide hot running water, and electricity throughout Engagi comes from solar power.
