Trip Itinerary
Gorongosa National Park
This seven-night journey begins with a flight from Johannesburg to Beira, followed by a bush flight connection to one of Africa’s wildest corners, Gorongosa National Park. The first four nights are spent at Chicari Camp, where you’ll be completely immersed in a biodiverse and ever-changing landscape. Here, the safari experience reflects sheer exploration in the truest sense. You could easily spend six hours journeying across different settings, from fever tree forests to open savannas, without encountering even one other vehicle. Game drives will almost certainly include sightings of the world’s largest waterbuck population, while also tracking key species like lion, wild dog, and the elusive leopard. You’ll also be on the lookout for Crawshay’s zebra, which are rare in this vast ecosystem, making any sighting a real highlight. When conditions permit, boating on Lake Urema and canoeing on the waterways open up the park’s water life, including crocodiles and wading hippo pods, against a stunning scenic backdrop. For an additional cost, book a Mount Gorongosa excursion and see forest trails, waterfalls, and perhaps rare birds like the green-headed oriole. Whether you add a scenic helicopter flight or a conservation tour (both available at an additional cost) to your itinerary, a stay at Chicari Camp puts you at the heart of an incredible wilderness story.
Gorongosa National Park
Following a scenic game drive transfer, the second part of your Gorongosa safari is at Muzimu Lodge, where the warm hospitality continues. As with Chicari, you’ll meet wonderful staff from local communities who are incredibly proud of how the park has been restored and continues to thrive. During your stay at both Muzimu and Chicari, you’ll have the opportunity to gain a deeper perspective on Mozambican culture and the connection between land and people. Behind the scenes, visit the Gorongosa Restoration Project, which shines a spotlight on the park’s story of resilience and rebirth. You’ll learn about its ground-breaking approach to conservation and far-reaching community initiatives, including early childhood development and women’s empowerment programmes. Besides day and night game drives and walking safaris, you can tour the Pangolin Conservation Centre and join a morning foraging walk, which follows the pangolins as they feed. These three nights at Muzimu Lodge end with a flight from Gorongosa back to Beira, connecting to Johannesburg and your onward journey home, leaving you with memories of one of Africa’s most meaningful wilderness success stories.
