Roving Bushtops Tent Tanzania
Our Yellow Zebra Opinion
  • Great potential
The Bushtops collection finally goes mobile! With good-quality rooms and good locations from April to November, this is a decent camp, one of the highest-quality mobiles. Restricted movement, however, makes it very seasonal.

Activities

Roving Bushtops offers an exciting variety of activities:

Expertly guided game drives

Nature walks

Hot air balloon safaris

Bushcraft challenge

Robanda school visit

  • Vehicle safaris from camp are exceptionally good, whether you’re based in Seronera or in Kusini. The focus of drives is following the huge herds of the Great Migration, as they enter the Central Serengeti come November/December and mid-April to end-June, and gather on the southern plains from end-January to mid-April for their calving season. However, there’s plenty to see in addition to the hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles! You can look out for all Big Five, as well as numerous smaller predators and herbivores. And there are hundreds of bird species.

  • This activity is available while the Serengeti’s grasses are short. Roving’s walks are also enjoyed in the company of knowledgeable and experienced guides, and they take place around the grounds of the camp at each location. Lasting from 25 to 40 minutes, they’re an exciting exploration of the resident plants, insects, birds, and larger life forms, and an opportunity to try a little tracking.

  • Balloon trips incur an additional cost. They’re arranged by camp staff, using an external operator. You’ll ascend just before dawn, in time to see the sun rise over the sprawling savanna and its wildlife. After an hour in the air, you’ll return to earth for a champagne breakfast – a real treat!

    Roving Bushtops Tanzania Safari
  • Originally designed for young safarists, this activity has been opened up to all guests due to its popularity with a variety of ages! You’ll learn an assortment of bush skills, such as making a fire, identifying tracks, and cooking. There are lessons in conservation too.

  • Camp staff members recommend pre-booking this visit, although it might be possible to arrange on short notice. You’ll take part in a tour of the local school, meeting the students and finding out about the projects funded by Roving Bushtops. It’s a must for anyone interested in combining their safari activities with a little culture in the Serengeti!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Access & Location

The camp is accessed via road transfer from the local airstrip. During November/December and from mid-April to end-June it’s situated in the Seronera region (Central Serengeti), whereas from the end of January to mid-April it’s in Kusini (in the park’s south). At both locations it’s set up on sprawling plains, with amazing views!

*As this is a mobile tented camp, the location will change throughout the year based on the camp’s position. Mobile tented camps relocate seasonally to follow wildlife movements. Temporary but fully serviced, mobile tented camps leave no permanent trace and offer access to remote wilderness areas far from the crowds.

Facilities

The communal tent, or mess tent, at Roving Bushtops is just as impressive as the guest units.

It too occupies an extensive wooden deck, accessed via a few steps. The deck offers dining furniture for the most part, as well as amazing views over the plains! Entering the stylish lounge, you’ll find a medley of seating around coffee tables, interspersed with interesting artefacts and elegant lighting. The dining area contains chic tables-and-chairs, and it’s the setting for delicious breakfasts, lunches, and four-course dinners. Guests can also opt to eat on their own deck or around the camp’s fire-pit. Situated a short distance from the mess tent, the fire-pit is the perfect place to get to know your fellow travellers and share stories of your safari adventures! And for the ultimate in relaxation, you can request a massage on your own deck.

Amenities

There are six guest tents including a family tent, spaced either side of the communal structure.

Family accommodation is created by combining two tents, not a difficult feat as each tent is positioned on wooden decking with wheels underneath it. The total floor space of every unit is impressive – over a hundred square metres! An exterior layer of canvas extends over the inner layer to form a shady veranda. This veranda is set with both lounge and dining furniture, and it’s a lovely spot for relaxing while marvelling at the scenery. Inside each tent, there’s a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, a safe, a permanent power supply, and free Wi-Fi. En-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, vanity basin, shower, and bathtub. Within the bedroom area of the tent, the canvas walls can be rolled up to admit cool breezes. The quality of the accommodation is very high overall.
