Pel’s is a stunning little property located on a private reserve in the far north of Kruger National Park. It only has four suites, so it’s an excellent option for small groups or families to book exclusively.

Activities

Pel’s offers classic safari activities – guided game drives and bush walks – as well as village tours and history tours. The Makuleke Contractual Park covers approximately 26,500 hectares of savanna, mopane woodlands, fever tree forests, rivers, and mountains.

  • Game drives take place in early morning and late afternoon into evening, and are fantastic for seeing a real wealth of wildlife. All of the Big Five live here – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo.

  • Other predators in residence include cheetah, spotted hyena, serval, caracal, wild cat, and wild dog, while the herbivore count features giraffe, blue wildebeest, plains zebra, an assortment of antelopes, and hippo.

  • There are plenty of birds to enjoy looking out for too – ostrich, raptors, songbirds, waterbirds, and of course the beautiful Pel’s fishing owl. Morning bush walks provide great opportunities to explore the park’s plant life and insect life, in the company of highly knowledgeable guides.

  • You can get to know the local village too, meeting the friendly visitors and gaining interesting insights into their ways of life in Makuleke.

  • And two history tours are offered – one to Crook’s Corner, where South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe meet, and the other to the ruins of the ancient city Thulamela.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Access & Location

The camp is usually approached from the nearest airstrip, at Pafuri. Flights to Pafuri are possible from Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport and from local areas including Timbavati and the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. The drive from Pafuri to Pel’s Post takes about 45 minutes, and of course travellers are welcome to self-drive into Makuleke as road transfers are available from most airports. The camp has a fabulous location high on the banks of the Luvuvhu river, within the north region of Kruger National Park.

The communal structure at Pel’s Post is every inch as impressive as the guest accommodation.

Accessed along a wooden walkway, it’s essentially a larger version of each nest. A lounge area contains ample comfortable seating and coffee tables, a cosy fireplace, piles of books, and a few intriguing artefacts. Dining spaces include a long table flanked with smart chairs, and separate tables and chairs on the deck for al fresco snacks and meals. Steps lead down to a fire-pit area, then up to the camp’s sparkling swimming pool, which is surrounded by sunloungers. Please note, although Pel’s doesn’t have a spa, in-room massages are available. Staff members are also happy to arrange outdoor dining, for example on the river bank or in a lovely shady spot under big baobab trees!

Guest accommodation consists of four rooms, each supported on sturdy stilts above the river and intended to resemble the nest of the Pel’s fishing owl.

At the back, a few steps lead to the entrance hall, from where both the bedroom and the open deck are accessed. The bedroom contains a double bed or twin beds with mosquito nets, bedside tables and lighting, daybeds, a writing desk and chair with mirror over, and a fan. Motorised blinds separate the bedroom from the deck, so when these are open the bedroom flows out onto an additional space set with a small dining table and chairs as well as a couple of sunloungers. The en-suite facilities occupy a spacious side section of each unit and comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins, a big bathtub that’s actually positioned on the deck, and an outside shower. A palette of mainly neutral tones with a few subtle patterns serves to emphasise the beauty of the world outside – views across river and savanna as far as the mountains are absolutely stunning!
