Dalia loves wildlife conservation, especially how it works on the ground. Hearing stories from local communities and connecting people behind the projects is what drives her, because conservation happens when people come together. She loves helping travellers find these moments and leave Africa with a deeper connection and appreciation for it.

Dalia’s Recent Travel Experience

Dalia’s fascination with culture recently led her to Hoi An, Vietnam’s UNESCO-listed former trading port. She wandered through the Old Town’s merchant houses shaped by centuries of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influence, and spent evenings by the Thu Bon River as silk lanterns lit the water. Watching patterns and lantern makers at work in the craft villages and learning to cook central Vietnamese dishes gave her a glimpse of traditions passed down through generations.

Dalia’s Most Memorable Experience

“It’s really hard to pick just one, but a recent one that still stays with me was tracking black rhinos on foot at Sera Conservancy in the Samburu region. About 10 minutes into the walk, our guide put up his hand and we all stopped. We couldn’t see anything at first, and then a female rhino and her calf were standing about 3 metres in front of us. It felt even closer than that – she lifted her head, ears twitching, and for a few seconds nobody moved. I was quite nervous, but I still managed to slowly raise my camera and capture the moment. Knowing these rhinos have returned to this conservancy after 30 years, protected by the local community, made the experience even more special.

I’ve been lucky enough to have had lots of firsts on safari – hearing a lion call for the first time, watching a leopard appear right next to our vehicle while it was hunting, and coming face to face with an elephant. What I love about the bush is that it’s never the same twice. Every time I go out, there’s something new to see so it always feels like the first time.”

Dalia’s Bio

Dalia’s curiosity about how people see the world led her to do a degree in Tourism Management and a thesis in Cultural Anthropology. Her research took her to South Africa, where she interviewed members from Zulu, Xhosa, Venda, Ndebele, and Tsonga communities about their traditions and beliefs that shape their relationship with wildlife and how younger generations view them today. This sparked a long-lasting fascination with the worldviews woven into folklore and tradition.

During the pandemic, Dalia spent almost a year living in Cape Town, volunteering in education outreach at a wildlife conservation centre that works to secure cheetahs’ future. She explored smaller reserves in South Africa, including Madikwe and Pilansberg with no other visitor in sight, spent a week road-tripping the Garden Route discovering the Winelands, and ventured up the coast to Durban.

Before joining YZ, Dalia worked for a tour operator in Bristol, always leading with a conservation-focused approach. She is now completing a master’s in Green Economy and Sustainable Development, researching the natural capital of ecotourism in Romania and exploring where tourism, communities, and wildlife meet.

Alongside this, Dalia volunteers as a writer, contributing to Moyo Nature Travel. She writes monthly pieces ranging from wildlife conservation to interviewing women in sustainable travel.

Outside work, Dalia loves photography, hiking, reading, and painting illustrations of her travels. However, her favourite moments are around a fire on a safari, listening to stories of the wild places she is lucky enough to explore. Wherever she wanders, it’s in Africa her heart feels most in sync.
