Zimbabwe in May

A dry season month in Zim, May heralds the beginning of amazing wildlife viewing – vegetation starts to thin and parks start to dry up, resulting in species gathering in impressive numbers around scarce water sources.

What's the weather going to be like in Zimbabwe in May?

  • Days are cloudless, fresh, and bright
  • It’s dry season, and there’s virtually no rain
  • Daytime temperatures are warm, but evening temperatures drop as the month progresses
  • With the cooler temperatures, it’s important to pack layers for early morning game drives and for journeys back to your accommodation after sundowners.

What are the highlights of visiting Zimbabwe in May?

  • At this early stage of dry season, temperatures are not too extreme
  • Landscapes are lush and green after the long rainy season, providing plenty of sustenance for herbivores such as elephants as they roam through the bush
  • There are fewer leaves on the trees and there’s less water around, so animals start to gather around waterholes, becoming easier to spot on vehicle and walking safaris
  • Clear blue skies over lush landscapes make for fantastic photography opportunities.
  • Additionally, the spray is still impressive and high water levels at Victoria Falls leads to ideal conditions for taking pictures of the world’s largest waterfall

Any lowlights?

  • May is a popular time to travel, so safari areas and accommodation are starting to get busier
  • Smaller wildlife is more difficult to see amongst the thick vegetation
  • Devil’s Pool and white water rafting at Victoria Falls aren’t available at this time because the water is high and too dangerous
