"I absolutely love this camp. The seven spacious suites are super-comfortable, and the main area looks out over a bustling waterhole that’s literally teeming with elephants."

OVERVIEW:

For travellers seeking authenticity in Hwange, Somalisa is hard to beat. The camp accepts children aged 7 years and older and we recommend constant supervision at all times as big game passes through camp!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is situated in the east of Hwange National Park, in a lovely grove of acacia trees.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SOMALISA CAMP:

Somalisa’s mess tent is open sided, affording superb views of the Kennedy Vlei. Also known as Massumamalisa, this is an old dried-up watercourse frequented by impressive herds of elephant. These elephants often come up close to camp and drink at the plunge pool! The lounge area is full of comfortable seating, while the dining area has a large table for communal meals. The library, though small, has a good selection of reading material.

Guest accommodation at Somalisa comprises seven spacious luxury sail tents – two doubles and four twins. The tents are positioned along a well-worn elephant path and in a long semi-circle or horseshoe shape among the trees. All boast a foundation of teak decking, canvas walls and roof, and mesh windows. One wall is also constructed from mesh, permitting fresh breezes to flow through. The interiors convey a lot of old-world charm, featuring dark teak furniture and varnished flooring, while en-suite facilities provide a copper slipper bath, double vanity, indoor and outdoor running water showers, and flush toilet.

ACTIVITIES AT SOMALISA CAMP:

  • Somalisa is well placed to offer outstanding game drives and walking safaris due to its exceptionally high standard of guiding and proximity to the Kennedy Vlei.
  • Here guests may view all Big Five animals (though please note it is very rare to see rhino), in addition to such species as hyena, kudu, sable, antelope. Birdlife is also prolific and following the first rains the vlei is home to numerous colourful wildflowers!
  • Somalisa’s owners are husband and wife Beks and Sophia Ndlovu. Beks is one of Africa’s best safari guides – and he and Sophia share a passion for Africa that really comes across in the set up of camp and the great guiding.
  • This is classic camping, but not without superb hospitality and some nice touches to make guests feel extra welcome – such as delicious food and drink, the option for private dining, and a tea tray in every tent!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
