OVERVIEW:
At YZ, we reckon Rhino has one of the best locations for travellers to get to know Kariba/Matusadona. And if authenticity is your thing, you will love staying in your very own boma and feeling part of nature – often guests hear animals pass by during the night!
ACCESS & LOCATION:
The camp is situated on its own island, Rhino Island, in the south of the lake, close to the game-rich Matusadona National Park.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT RHINO SAFARI CAMP:
Rhino’s main lodge is a traditional wood-and-thatch boma, consisting of two storeys. On the lower floor, there is a bar and buffet area, while upstairs accommodates comfortable seating and a second dining space. The sides of the boma are completely open, allowing fresh breezes from the lake to flow through. There are superb views of the lake and passing wildlife. The camp has a small selection of books and games – and tea, coffee and other beverages are available all day. Just outside the boma, in the shade of trees, there is a plunge pool.
The guest rooms at Rhino comprise seven A-frame chalet-style dwellings, each nestling snugly in the jesse-bush on sandy paths along the lakeline. These too are constructed from wood and thatch, but rather than occupying two separate storeys they are raised on stilts and split level. Their walls extend halfway to the roof and are made of reeds, which makes for very breezy accommodation! Each unit contains twin beds, a seating area, a wardrobe and a dressing table. The en-suite facilities are located on the lower staging and consist of flush toilet, hand basin and open-air shower, with toiletries provided by Rhino
ACTIVITIES AT RHINO SAFARI CAMP:
The region of Kariba/Matusadona that is home to Rhino Camp is an IPZ, an intensive protection zone, intended for the relocation of black rhino.
- There really is wildlife in abundance here in addition to rhino – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, zebra, antelope. So game drives and game walks are pretty impressive!
- Guests are also invited to cruise the shoreline, spotting hippo, crocodile, and over 300 species of bird – not least fish eagle, heron and kingfisher. These excursions also offer excellent opportunities for photography, when the sun sets over the water.
- Fishing is available too and occasionally it is possible to visit Ume Crocodile Farm at Rhokari Airstrip.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
