Thorntree River Lodge is situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi river, within Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. It has recently been rebuilt, and is now owned and operated by African Bush Camps.

Thorntree River’s proximity to Victoria Falls makes for a wonderful range of activities overall, from game drives to watersports! There is accommodation to suit most types of traveller, with no age restrictions. Exclusive bookings are available, for a minimum of 20 persons. Thorntree River Lodge is a top option for travellers interested in experiencing superb safari and all the fun of the Falls!

The property is easy to access via road transfer from the international airports of Livingstone and Victoria Falls. Positioned approximately 15 kilometres upstream from the Falls, it has a charming riverside location.

The communal lodge is made out of stone, timber, and canvas. Its interiors include a pleasant lounge, featuring comfy chairs and sofas around coffee tables, a cosy central fireplace, a well-stocked bar, and a chic dining area – the palette throughout is earthy tones mingling with cool blues. Outside, there is a deck, with amazing views out over the river! The deck incorporates a boma as well as an infinity pool flanked by sunloungers – it’s a great spot for socialising with your fellow travellers, whether you’re swapping safari stories around a roaring fire or taking time to chill in between activities. Further decking forms a path leading to another fire-pit area, right on the water! There’s a gym too, and a spa for those in need of a little pampering.

Guest accommodation at Thorntree River Lodge consists of ten tents in total – eight twins and two for families. All are downstream from the communal lodge, set along well-marked pathways and raised above ground level. The style is understated elegance, with plenty of rustic touches to complement the natural surroundings. Each twin tent contains a double bed or twin beds, bedside lighting, ample storage space, and en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, twin washbasins with mirror over, indoor shower, and outdoor shower! To the front of the tent, overlooking the river, is a lovely private veranda with your very own plunge pool. Both family units boast all the amenities of the twin tents, in addition to a second bedroom with two beds.

Thorntree River Lodge provides an excellent assortment of activities, due to its situation in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and not far from Victoria Falls.

  • Within the national park, guests may enjoy game drives and rhino trekking! As well as rhino, you can expect to see lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, lots of different antelope species, crocodile, hippo, and a wealth of birdlife.
  • For wet ‘n’ wild watersports, you need only head to the world-famous Victoria Falls, for white water rafting, bungee jumping, gorge swinging, zip wiring, and much more besides!
  • Village visits are available too, in which guests can learn about the customs, heritage, and daily lives of the local people. There’s more to discover in the way of culture at Livingstone Museum, not least Tonga ritual artefacts and a life-sized model African village!
  • And travellers who just love messing about on the river can go fishing or canoeing – or even embark on a beautiful sunset cruise in the lodge’s own boat, a spectacular end to a fun-filled day.

*This property is unfenced and although animal densities are not that high along this stretch of the Zambezi River, there is always the potential for dangerous game. So if you opt to stay here please always be cautious and look out for wildlife when walking around, especially at night.
