“A pioneering eco-property in the South Luangwa, Shawa Luangwa Camp is a partnership between Green Safaris and legendary guide, Jacob Shawa. The lodge runs silent safaris with four electric vehicles, all run by solar power.”

OVERVIEW:

Opened in 2021, Shawa Luangwa Camp offers exclusive experiences in the South Luangwa! Guests will enjoy game drives in the camp’s impressive fleet of quiet electric vehicles – a major draw. Shawa Luangwa is the fourth property in the Green Safaris portfolio, joining Ila Safari Lodge, Kaya Mawa, and Chisa Busanga Camp. It’s named after Jacob Shawa, a famous safari guide who has featured in Wanderlust’s World Guide Awards. A favourite at YZ, Green Safaris prides itself on sustainable design, as well as care of local wildlife and communities. Accommodation will be booked on a full-board basis and the camp will be open from June to November every year.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp can be most easily accessed via 1 hour’s road transfer from Mfuwe Airport. The site is close to the Nsefu sector of the South Luangwa National Park, overlooking the beautiful Luangwa river.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SHAWA LUANGWA CAMP:

There are just five en suite canvas guest tents in an A-frame design, two with the option of interconnecting to form a double tent for family use. The tents are positioned on a wooden platform and accessed via steps at the back of the structure. A few trees surround the tent, to provide some pleasant shade during the daytime. Peering inside, you'll see a double bed and furnishings such as bedside stands and seating. The washroom occupies one side of the tent, with a flush toilet, washbasin, and shower. The platform will function as a private deck, offering 270-degree views over the river and across the park - a nice little spot for relaxing!

The main mess area is also raised on a platform and the dining area is open with wonderful views of the river. There is a large table for communal dining, a central boma area for evenings spent by the fire, and a cooling swimming pool.

*Please be aware that we are unable to book this property for families with young children under the age of 6 years, for safety reasons relating to the balconies/decks/walkways.*

ACTIVITIES AT SHAWA LUANGWA CAMP:

At Shawa, the South Luangwa is right on the doorstep, ideal for vehicle, boating, and walking safaris!

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - These will take place in two locations – a minute’s drive from camp across the river, and within the Nsefu sector, which is only 15 minutes away. Green Safaris has termed these drives ‘silent safaris’, due to the very small amount of noise generated by the camp’s electric vehicles (EVs). The first ‘eLandy’ was developed and used at Ila Safari Lodge seven years ago. Today the company owns a fleet of five solar-powered EVs! Once aboard an EV and travelling through the South Luangwa, guests will enjoy viewing a wide range of wildlife. This national park is home to four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! Smaller predators in residence include cheetah, hyena, and occasional wild dog, while the herbivore count features giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, a fine assortment of antelopes, and numerous hippo.
  • Boating safaris

    - Shawa Luangwa Camp offers boating safaris where you can cruise quietly along the Luangwa River and watch as birds dive for fish, crocodiles bask in the sun and elephants splash in the shallows.
  • Birdwatching

    - The bird count here is very impressive, with over 400 bird species having been recorded, not least specials such as western banded snake eagle, black-throated wattle-eye, woodland kingfisher, and the mysterious Pel’s fishing owl.
  • Walking safaris

    - Walk out with a knowledgeable guide and armed scout through the bush and become immersed in the incredible landscapes that are rich in diverse plant, animal, and birdlife.
