“Located at the heart of the South Luangwa National Park, this lodge-style bush camp has a few additional luxuries that make it a great choice for those who want to be in the very best location, and in a less rustic camp.”

OVERVIEW:

Lion Camp is operated in partnership with Mantis Hotels and Eco Escapes. Mantis stands for ‘Man And Nature Together Is Sustainable’, and the camp is run in line with that philosophy. Having been closed throughout 2017, it re-opened in May 2018 following complete refurbishment! The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, a laundry service, safari activities and park fees. Children incur a reduced rate – please contact a member of the YZ team for details. The camp is usually open from 25th May to 31st October.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via 3 hours’ road transfer from Mfuwe. It’s situated in the remote northern region of South Luangwa National Park, on the banks of an oxbow lagoon adjacent to sprawling plains.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT LION CAMP:

Guest accommodation consists of eight luxury suites and two deluxe suites. All have classic canvas walls and a thatch roof, and they’re raised on sturdy stilts to showcase the views. The luxury suites offer either an extra-length king or twin bedroom, and a third bed can be added to sleep a child. Other room features include bedside lighting, plenty of storage space, and a separate seating area. Once netting in front of the suite has been rolled up, this seating area functions as a private veranda with breathtaking vistas of the South Luangwa and its wildlife! The en-suite facilities are positioned discreetly to one side of the bedroom. Every suite benefits from Evening Breeze cooling units, installed directly above the beds, in addition to international plug points, charging facilities, USB ports, mosquito nets, and a hairdryer. The deluxe suites are more spacious and more secluded, and both boast an outdoor bathtub. If you’re looking for a honeymoon option, this might be one of the South Luangwa’s best!

Lion Camp’s communal lodge is a classic canvas-wall thatch-roof structure known as a ‘chitenge’, positioned on a deck made out of sustainable timber. It’s accessed from the guest suites via wooden walkways. Inside, there’s a comfortable lounge, dining area, and bar, all neutrally furnished to enhance the natural surroundings. Service standards are set high here, and the food and drink is exceptionally good! Guests can also tuck in to delicious meals on the lodge’s deck, all the while gazing out over the plains and spotting some local wildlife. As the camp is unfenced, big cats and herbivores alike are able to wander through. The boma provides a great setting for al fresco dining, and anyone in need of cooling off in between activities need only slide into the sparkling swimming pool!

*Please be aware that the swimming pool here has no signage, so take care before you jump in!*

ACTIVITIES AT LION CAMP:

The following activities are offered at Lion Camp:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - The South Luangwa is made up of sprawling plains, a wide variety of woodlands, and plentiful water sources, not least the Luangwa river. Drives cover a lot of ground and offer opportunities to view a wonderful range of wildlife! There are no rhino in the South Luangwa, but all other members of the Big Five are present – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. There are giraffe too, in addition to zebra, baboon, monkey, hippopotamus, and an impressive assortment of antelopes including impala, bushbuck, waterbuck, and eland.
  • Walking safaris

    - This activity is also enjoyed in the presence of a knowledgeable and experienced guide. Walks are highly recommended for safarists interested in taking a really close look at the smaller lives of the South Luangwa – the plants, insects, and birds. The park is home to over 400 types of feathery friend, among them raptors, waterbirds, bee-eaters, owls, and parrots!
  • Photographic safaris

    - A dry-season activity, the photo safari is available just several times per year, so please get in touch with us for advice on when to stay at Lion Camp if you’d like to include it in your itinerary. It involves specialist photographic guide Edward Selfe, who lives in the South Luangwa. A keen naturalist, Edward has a decade’s experience of guiding and a great talent for capturing wildlife on film. You can check out his updates here.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
