"Famous for its photographic hides, this camp has recently been refurbished. If you are a photographer, you will be delighted to find some of the best photographic guides in the South Luangwa here."

OVERVIEW:

We encourage you to go to Kaingo! This truly is a dream destination, especially for keen photographers. Kaingo is one of very few camps in South Luangwa that is run by its owners. Derek Shenton has a passion for authentic safari experience and this shows itself throughout camp – from the design of the buildings to the exceptional guiding to the friendliness of staff.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

It is situated in the northern region of wildlife haven South Luangwa National Park.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KAINGO CAMP:

The communal area of camp comprises a substantial brick-and-thatch building. This contains a comfortable chitenge (lounge/diner) and a fabulous bar carved from the enormous trunk of a thousand-years-old leadenwood tree. Adjoining the chitenge are a library and a small curio shop. The building is open sided to let in cool breezes and to provide amazing views of Luangwa River. A lounge deck extends over the river and is the perfect place to relax between safaris – there is even a telescope here!

Guest accommodation at Kaingo consists of just six riverside chalets, also constructed from brick and thatch. Four have twin beds and two are honeymoon suites, the latter located slightly farther from camp. Both options feature locally made furniture on a natural palette of creams and browns, in addition to African prints and superb photography by Jules Shenton. All chalets boast en-suite bathrooms with flush toilet, basin and shower. Outside, tucked under trees, there is a bath, while a private deck boasts brilliant views of a hippo pod nearby!

ACTIVITIES AT KAINGO CAMP:

  • South Luangwa is quite simply one of the best parks for game viewing in all Africa, so it comes as no surprise that activities at Kaingo focus on game drives – during early morning, mid-day, and afternoon/evening! Walking safari is also available, with a particular emphasis on photography.
  • Derek Shenton’s famous hides offer incredible opportunities to capture animals sating their thirst at a waterhole or birds cavorting on the shores of a lagoon. The quality of photo opportunities is well matched with the great guiding and abundance of wildlife, making Kaingo very popular with photographers.
  • And it is also possible to fish here, in the river close to camp.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
