"Chikoko Tree Camp's twin sister, Big Lagoon Camp is a walking-only camp that has a remote, rustic, traditional safari feel that adventurous safari-goers will love."

OVERVIEW:

Previously known as Crocodile Bush Camp or Crocodile River Camp, this Remote Africa Safaris camp was relocated to the historic Big Lagoon site and renamed in 2022. Now set overlooking an extensive lagoon from its position within an ebony forest, the draw of Big Lagoon Camp is that it is only accessible on foot and offers unparalleled walking safaris. We are huge fans of Big Lagoon, but we often overlook it, choosing sister camp Chikoko for our itineraries instead. The reality is that this is very much just a question of taste – both camps offer the same sense of adventure and have the high level of guiding that is so important in camps like this.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Big Lagoon Camp is one of the northern camps in South Luangwa National Park. There are no roads or vehicles around the camp, so nearby access is by foot. There are two ways to access Big Lagoon camp, after the initial drive to the Luangwa River - first is a 5-minute canoe trip across Luangwa River followed by a 4-hour walking safari or the faster way which starts again with a 5-minute canoe trip across Luangwa River, but ends with a 40-minute walk, best for direct transfers.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT BIG LAGOON CAMP:

Big Lagoon Camp accommodates six guests in three chalets made of reed and thatch. It is an adventurous camp where the main activity is walking. Recently, game drives have been introduced into the camp for the first time.

The chalets all rest beneath a grove of Muchenja (ebony trees) and are simple, comfortable, and built using natural materials.

ACTIVITIES AT BIG LAGOON CAMP:

The primary and main focus at Big Lagoon Camp is guided walking safaris:

  • Expertly guided walks

     – Big Lagoon Camp is one of the purest safari experiences we know – adventurous and authentic, yet very high quality. You will not find guiding this good in many places.
  • Wildlife spotting

    – This area is a hotspot for wildlife, including land, roan, kudu, elephant, giraffe, wild dog, lion, warthog, hippo, crocodile.
  • Walking trail combinations

Combinations with Tafika Camp, Chikoko Tree Camp, and the equally amazing Mwaleshi Camp are common itineraries.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
