"A fantastic little authentic bush camp that offers a traditional safari experience in the heart of Hwange National Park. For those looking for a high level of guiding, incredible game viewing, authenticity, and no frills, this is the place to go!"

OVERVIEW:

This camp is owned and operated by African Bush Camps, which is also responsible for Somalisa Camp and Somalisa Acacia – in fact, Expeditions is an exact replica of the original Camp! All three properties provide authentic safari experiences.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Somalisa Expeditions is situated on a small island of acacia trees, adjacent to a floodplain. The Somalisa Concession, in Hwange National Park, offers first-rate wildlife watching.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SOMALISA EXPEDITIONS:

The main lodge is positioned in the shade of acacia trees. It consists of a classic mess tent arrangement, with wood floors, wood beams, and canvas roof and walls. Comfortable chairs and sofas are set out around a coffee table in the lounge area. The lounge also contains a number of occasional tables, a few bookshelves, and a small bar. In the dining area, there is a long table for communal meals – this is flanked by upright chairs, all in beautiful dark wood. The lounge and dining space flow out onto a deck with additional seating and a fire pit area, perfect for getting to know your fellow travelers and sharing safari tales! The deck overlooks a waterhole where animals often come to quench their thirst – elephant are frequently viewed here. And there is a small swimming pool with sunloungers alongside, fabulous for winding down between safari activities!

Guest accommodation at Somalisa Expeditions comprises six tents, Meru in style. All are a short stroll from the mess tent, on a pathway through the trees. The tents are raised above ground level, with a few steps up to a covered veranda. There are a couple of chairs on the veranda, so you have your very own viewing deck! The interior of each tent is accessed by unzipping the canvas entrance doors. Just like the mess tent, the floors are dark polished wood and the walls and roof are canvas, supporting by sturdy beams. The furnishings are dark wood too. Each tent has a large double bed, bedside tables and lighting, mosquito nets, a fan, a tea-and-coffee station, and plenty of storage space for stashing valuables and hanging clothes. A patterned rug adds a little comfort. At the back, another zipped flap leads to the en-suite facilities of flush toilet, washbasin unit, and bucket shower.

ACTIVITIES AT SOMALISA EXPEDITIONS:

  • Somalisa Expeditions offers some superb safari activities! Game drives take place during the day and at night.
  • The sprawling savanna and vlei are home to loads of wildlife – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino, hyena, numerous antelope species, and many more!
  • The birdlife is also outstanding, with well over 400 types of feathery friends in the area.
  • Walking safaris provide amazing opportunities to look out for the birds as well as all the insects, plants, and small things that you tend to miss while traveling in the 4 by 4.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
