Due to open in May 2020, Palm River Lodge will be run by the Ilala Hotel Group. This company also operates the excellent Vic Falls-based Ilala Lodge! If you’d like to be among the new hotel’s first guests, please contact a member of our team.
Palm River Lodge is the latest addition to the Ilala Hotel Group portfolio, which includes Ilala Lodge and three cruise boats known as Ra-Ikane I, II, and III. We are really looking forward to visiting the new property and providing our report! In the meantime, we’re able to offer a few details based on the information we’ve received from Ilala. Accommodation will be booked on a B&B basis, and the lodge will be open all year round.
Access & location:
The lodge will be accessed via road transfer from Victoria Falls International Airport, for example. Its site is the banks of the Zambezi river, only a short distance from the world’s largest waterfall!
Accommodation & facilities at Palm River Lodge:
Guest accommodation will consist of 73 luxury rooms, one presidential suite, two honeymoon suites, and two private villas. All options will be very spacious, with contemporary furnishings and a superb range of modern conveniences. The overall design of the hotel is inspired by the Queenslander style, with its corrugated roofing, subtle gables, and high ceilings within. Looking at a picture of the main building, we see plenty of private balconies and patio areas, where guests will be able to relax while enjoying breathtaking views!
The communal spaces at Palm River Lodge will also be very well appointed. They’ll include sumptuous lounges and two restaurants. One eatery will be indoors, offering delicious à la carte selections, while the other will be set up on the riverbanks. The hotel will also have a gym, described as state of the art, as well as a relaxing spa and an al fresco swimming pool. And guests will enjoy access onto Ilala Hotel Group’s three cruise boats too!
Activities at Palm River Lodge:
We anticipate that the hotel will offer the same sorts of activities as sister property Ilala Lodge. Here are just a few examples of things we’ll be able to arrange for you at an extra cost:
Falls tours- Always a great start to any stay in the Victoria Falls region, expertly guided tours of the waterfall provide a fascinating introduction to The Smoke that Thunders. Walks can include the lush rainforest, the dramatic gorges, and the statue of David Livingstone, who was the first European to see the Falls.
Wet-and-wild watersports- Opportunities to get the adrenaline pumping abound here! Among the Falls thrills available are white water rafting, bungee jumping, canoeing, zipwiring, gorge swinging, and a dip in Devil’s Pool, the pool positioned precariously at the top of the waterfall.
River cruises- Perfect for taking time to relax and simply enjoy being in this spectacular part of the world, cruises appeal to all types of traveller. As you drift along the Zambezi, you’ll spot predators and herbivores alike coming to drink on the banks as well as the likes of crocs and hippos swimming in the water. You can also look out for a wealth of waterbirds!
Helicopter flights- See it all from the sky, by boarding a helicopter and flying over the Falls area. Usually two flights are offered. One involves a back-and-forth journey above the waterfall before a pause to bank and marvel at the gorges, while another longer flight provides views of Zambezi National Park too!

*Big game often wanders along the banks of the Zambezi River and even right into Victoria Falls Town itself. So if you are at your hotel, walking into town, or sightseeing, always be cautious of big game - keep your distance and always move away from it if you see it.
