"If you want luxury on the Busanga Plains, look no further. Shumba Camp was by far the most luxurious property we visited in the Kafue – the rooms and main areas are stunning, all with lovely views across the plains."

The location is very good, and general standards of service and hospitality are set very high. However, we have always been huge fans of Shumba’s slightly more rustic sister camp, Busanga Bushcamp, as we find the latter accommodation more in keeping with the remote, adventurous feel of the park.

Shumba Camp is located in the heart of Busanga Plains in the north of the Park.

Originally a bush camp run by the outdoorsy safari company Busanga Trails, Shumba has changed completely from its original rustic design – the camp is now raised onto decking and is home to six luxury suites.

  • Activities include game drives by day and by night as well as walking safaris. Balloon safaris have been possible in recent years – a somewhat bizarre activity considering the remote feel of safari in this park!
  • Busanga Plains are especially good during the dry season from July to October, when the game is at its most impressive. For the rest of the year, we view Busanga Plains, and the entire Kafue for that matter, as a destination for old safari hands only.
  • Please note: Hot air ballooning will not be offered during the 2021 season

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
