“This is a brand new offering on the Busanga Plains and it looks set to be the most unique in build and style. We haven’t seen it yet, but we are looking forward to our first visit.”

OVERVIEW:

Positioned in a wildlife-rich area of Kafue National Park, Chisa Busanga offers exceptionally good guided game drives and walking safaris. Chisa Busanga Camp is owned and run by Green Safaris. This company also operates Ila Safari Lodge in Kafue, as well as the beach lodge Kaya Mawa on Lake Malawi.

Though we haven't visited, based on our experience of the sister properties, we feel Chisa Busanga is a very unique camp. Green Safaris has a passion for sustainable design, and the company also prides itself on nurturing the local wildlife and communities. Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis and the camp is open from June to November every year.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Chisa Busanga can be accessed from Lusaka International Airport, via chartered flight (1 hour) or road transfer (3 hours). The site’s location is an island at the heart of the Busanga Plains, in the northern region of Kafue National Park.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT CHISA BUSANGA CAMP:

Guest accommodation consists of just four rooms, each taking the form of a bird’s nest. In fact, the word Chisa means ‘bird’s nest’. The rooms offer an en-suite washroom and an outdoor shower. Every nest has a private observation deck too, positioned to provide views of the sun rising over the plains and wildlife roaming through the grasses. And the nest situated closest to the communal building will include a lift, opening up the camp to travelers who struggle with or are unable to use steps.

The communal facilities at Chisa Busanga Camp are based around an authentic boma. In common with the guest nests, these are elevated well above ground level, maximizing vistas over the plains. There's a plunge pool that provides a pleasant place for relaxation in between activities.

ACTIVITIES AT CHISA BUSANGA CAMP:

Chisa Busanga Camp offers classic safari activities:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    -  The total area of the Busanga Plains is well over 13,000 square kilometers. During green season the plains flood, which is why the camp will be open for dry season only. Once the waters have receded, a fine assortment of plains game returns to graze on the grasses, and in their wake there’s a reasonable amount of predators. Just a few highlights here include black-maned lion, cheetah, wild dog, wildebeest, zebra, impala, puku, and pangolin. Drives start off from camp in the early morning and late afternoon, and they provide exciting opportunities to view all this wildlife! It’s also worth mentioning that the camp uses an electric vehicle, a much quieter option than the standard diesel 4 × 4.
  • Walking safaris

    - Also enjoyed in the presence of a knowledgeable and experienced guide, walks on the plains will appeal to anyone interested in getting to know the smaller lives of Busanga. From plants to insects to birds, there’s plenty to appreciate. More than 500 bird species have been recorded in the area, including raptors, herons, egrets, storks, cranes, chats, and kingfishers. As you might expect, the variety of waterbirds is particularly impressive.

This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
