"A hugely characterful mid-range property, and one of only two lodges located within the boundaries of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Due to its location, it's not unusual to see gorillas wandering through the grounds."

OVERVIEW:

Buhoma Lodge is perfectly placed for visitors to go gorilla trekking and enjoy lots of other activities, and the property offers very comfortable accommodation and communal spaces too! The accommodation includes a family chalet, but there is an age restriction on tracking gorillas – trackers must be at least 15 years old. However, forest walks, birding, and more besides are available to all!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Buhoma Lodge is one of just two properties situated inside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT BUHOMA LODGE:

Buhoma’s communal areas are found in a two-story sustainable timber, stone, and thatch structure, which merges seamlessly with the surrounding forest. The lounge contains sofas and stools around coffee tables, in addition to a cozy fireplace, with the bar set up along the back wall. The bar provides free Wi-Fi and recharging facilities! Adjoining the lounge/bar is the dining space, which provides tables of various sizes and sturdy wooden chairs. Most of the furniture in the communal lodge is made of wood, so you really feel part of the forest! And as the lodge is open-sided, you can enjoy amazing views over the national park while you relax, have a drink, and tuck in to a delicious meal. There is also a spa treatment room, where all overnight lodge guests receive a complimentary massage!

Guest accommodation at Buhoma consists of ten chalets, also constructed using sustainable materials. Nine are standard chalets, designed to sleep two adults but with sufficient space for an extra bed to fit a child aged under 5 years. The remaining chalet is provided for a family or for honeymooners. Both options benefit from eco-friendly solar lighting, insect-proof window screens, and a safe. The beds are very comfy and en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet and spacious washbasin, with walk-in hot-water rain shower and/or bathtub. As per the communal lodge, there are a lot of wood furnishings! And at the front of each chalet there is a lovely veranda, where you can take time in between activities to marvel at the gorgeous forest scenery.

ACTIVITIES AT BUHOMA LODGE:

Buhoma offers a great range of activities!

  • Gorilla trekking is the main reason to visit Bwindi, but there are loads of other things to do here. Treks start off early in the morning, to allow ample time to locate the gorillas! A minimum of two hours is usually required, increasing to as much as eight hours if the gorillas have decided to base themselves high up in Bwindi’s mountains. Trekkers are allotted an hour for observing the gorillas as they feed, rest, and play. This is a very special experience, and well worth the effort of a long hike!
  • Other activities available are forest walks, bird and butterfly watching, and community visits.
  • Buhoma’s 3–4-hour walk to a waterfall is highly recommended, and you can view all sorts of wildlife on the way. Bwindi has over 350 bird species and more than 200 types of butterfly!
  • A cultural walk is also on offer, during which you can learn all about the traditions of the local Batwa people. This is complemented by village walks, with highlights such as meeting the healer and checking out the banana brewery, as well as a trip to the local hospital.

All treks and walks from Buhoma are enjoyed in the presence of knowledgeable guides – for gorilla treks, a Uganda Wildlife Authority guide shows you around the gorillas’ home.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Staying at Buhoma Lodge was a sort of homecoming for me. I had stayed there in January 2020 on my first trip to Uganda. I enjoyed the lodge -- the comfort of its tree-house style cottages, the cordial staff, delicious cuisine and the best gin and tonics ini the world -- so much, I made returning there a must on my second trip. I was not disappointed. In fact, so many staff members are still there, it felt like a reunion. Located in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, it's not unusual to see some of the wild residents of the forest visit the grounds. One morning at breakfast, I enjoyed the amusing antics of a group of L'Hoest's monkeys on nearby trees, and the bird song is enchanting. Most gorilla tracking and nature walks commence steps away from the lodge and there are lovely crafts and souvenir shops to stroll by outside the park, including the women's cooperative, Ride 4 Women. I heartily recommend a stay at Buhoma Lodge.

Simply can’t beat the location. Within walking distance of the ranger lodge to start gorilla trekking. Thomas, the lodge manager, was outstanding and very accommodating. We had an issue with our first chalet (number 8 behind the kitchen), but he quickly took care of it. Place really made you feel at home. Meals were all delicious! If you are going gorilla trekking this is THE best place to stay.
