Tanzania Family Safari Vacations

Tanzania is one of our favourite destinations for families!

The sheer concentration of game in Tanzania’s northern parks, specifically the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, means that game drives are packed with action. There are also a number of different activities, including cultural interactions with Maasai tribes and numerous local villages to explore.

The first point to mention is that Tanzania is in Africa’s Malaria belt. This is not to be taken lightly – we do not advise that young children should travel to Tanzania. Our recommended age is six and above. The majority of Tanzania’s best camps do not permit children under the age of six or eight.

The North of the country is our destination of choice for families. This ‘driving circuit’ is packed with game and is one of the most affordable destinations in Africa for family trips –the larger the group, the more economical the trip, as the vehicle cost is split among the family.

Move south to the quieter parks of Selous or Ruaha and there is a scattering of camps that cater especially well for children. We do not recommend that young children visit Katavi or Mahale in the far west.

The range of habitat throughout these northern parks, along with the diversity of game on offer and the wide range of attractions, are the major reasons this area is so popular. The parks here are also home to a number of larger hotels with swimming pools and television rooms.

Tanzania is Africa’s finest safari and beach destination – high quality safari camps and parks are linked easily with some of Africa’s best beaches. Zanzibar is the obvious add-on to a Tanzania safari and certainly has some of the best beach resorts in the area. Find out more about the different types of things for kids to do on a safari on our blog.

Our favourite family camps for families with children are Plantation Lodge (for Ngorongoro) and maybe somewhat surprisngly, we recommend Alex Walker’s Serian Camp for the Serengeti. Alex caters extremely well for children as well as safari enthusiasts, making this a great choice for adventurous families. However, if money is no object, Singita Faru Faru and Singita Sasakwa are the places to stay.

Flying safaris also open up a number of northern Tanzania’s most expensive properties – &Beyond’s Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Serengeti Under Canvas and Mnemba Island Lodge all have family units.
