"Wow. A stunning lodge sitting atop an escarpment with sweeping views of Lake Eyasi. Not everyone will want to take time out of their busy safari, but if you want a slower pace then come and spend a few days here for some walking, relaxing, and a visit to two fascinating Tanzania tribes."

OVERVIEW:

Ziwani Lodge is privately owned and run. A stay here is an excellent add-on to a safari involving Tanzania’s famous Northern Circuit. Alternatively, Lake Eyasi is an amazing vacation destination in its own right. The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and a laundry service. The lodge is open all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The lodge can be accessed via 1 hour 15 minutes’ road transfer from Lake Manyara Airport. It’s situated on an escarpment on the remote western shores of Lake Eyasi, boasting breathtaking views of the lake and the Rift Valley!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT ZIWANI LODGE:

Guest accommodation consists of seven cottages. All are made out of stone, timber, and small amounts of glass, and their design is very much inspired by local structures. Entering a standard cottage, you’ll find a comfy bedroom, featuring double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, and a few light floor rugs. The palette is neutrals for the most part, with an occasional pattern or splash of color. Every tent’s washroom is positioned behind the bedroom space, and it contains a flush toilet, twin washbasins with mirror over, and step-up shower. The family cottage offers two bedrooms, each with an en-suite shower room connecting the two units. The windows have shutters, so you can keep the heat out when necessary.

Ziwani’s communal lodge is also a stone, timber, and glass build. It contains the property’s pleasant lounge, which features colorfully cushioned seating around occasional tables. The floors are strewn with patterned rugs, and the walls are adorned with brass lantern-style light fittings, lending a Moroccan or even Zanzibari vibe! Overhead fans help to maintain a comfortable temperature while guests relax and enjoy the views. In the lodge’s dining area, chic wooden tables-and-chairs are nicely laid in readiness for delicious meals. The veranda, the front porch of the building, provides an additional space for lounging, and it’s certainly the best spot for marveling at the scenery! Finally, just a short distance from the lodge, there’s Ziwani’s highly inviting swimming pool. Flanked by sunloungers, some set out in the shade of a small timber shelter, it’s ideal for cooling off in between trips around Lake Eyasi.

*Please be aware that the swimming pool here has no depth markings, so take care before you jump in

ACTIVITIES AT ZIWANI LODGE:

The lodge offers some thrilling experiences within the Lake Eyasi area, as follows:

  • Trekking

    - The region is terrific for treks! You can enjoy lovely lake views while walking along the shores of Eyasi, and keen birders can look out for such species as flamingos, great white pelican, grey-headed gull, yellow-billed stork, pied avocet, and African spoonbill. Hippos may be spotted during green season. There’s some rock art to appreciate also.
  • Cultural experiences with the Hadza

    - This tribe is made up of highly skilled hunter–gatherers. You can visit their village and learn all about their ways of life. The males hunt both large and small animals using bows-and-arrows, while the females forage for berries and fruit.
  • Cultural experiences with the Datoga

    - The Datoga are superb silversmiths. You can take a trip to their village too, to interact with them and to watch them working. Among their many talents is making hunting tools for the Hadza, in exchange for skins and food. Spending any amount of time with the local peoples is truly fascinating!
