"The private villa of The Tides! A wonderful sleepy area that’s famous for laidback beach living away from the crowds. A great spot and seriously competitive price."

OVERVIEW:

Whether combined with time on safari or simply as a standalone destination, the villa offers a high-quality vacation. The name of the villa means ‘Tides’, and it is sister property to The Tides, located a short distance away. Mawimbi is booked on an exclusive basis, and it is an excellent option for a group of up to 12 family members or friends hoping to take a fab beach break. The area combines well with many of Tanzania’s wildlife-rich national parks and game reserves, for the ultimate in bush and beach!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The villa may be accessed via flight to its private airstrip, Mashado, followed by a 10-minute road transfer. Flights to Mashado are available from Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar. Private flights are possible too! Once you have arrived, you can take time to settle in and admire the beautiful scenery. Mawimbi is set just a short distance from the beach of Ushongo.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT MAWIMBI VILLA:

The villa is a gorgeous timber, stone, and thatch two-story building, featuring arches, pillars, and wooden shutters. It is surrounded by gardens containing well-kept lawns and lofty palm trees. Inside, lounge areas provide some sumptuous seating around coffee tables, while dining areas include a long table and rattan chairs for communal meals. Mawimbi has a host, a butler, and a private chef to ensure you feel at home throughout your stay. The villa’s grounds also boast a swimming pool and sun loungers. And guests have access to the beachfront bar and restaurant at sister property The Tides! Fresh fish and sophisticated cocktails are just two of the culinary highlights on offer there.

Mawimbi has six bedrooms, all named after a type of animal or bird. Nyati (‘Buffalo’) is found in the villa’s south wing, on the first floor. It has 35 square meters of floor space and contains a king-size bed, a dressing room, a lounge area, a balcony terrace with seating, and en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, twin washbasins, and walk-in shower. Other amenities include air conditioning, mosquito nets, a safe, and flatscreen television. Twiga (‘Giraffe’), on the first floor within the north wing, has either a double bed or twin beds and a balcony terrace. Providing 26 square meters of floor space, this room is smaller than Nyati and it shares an en-suite bathroom with Heroe, ‘Flamingo’. Heroe is smaller still, at 15 square meters, and designed to sleep two children in bunk beds. Both Heroe and Twiga benefit from air conditioning, mosquito nets, and a safe. Kasa – ‘Turtle’, 20 square meters, north wing, ground floor – appeals to couples, as it has a double bed and a private veranda, as well as the same amenities as Heroe and Twiga. En-suite facilities are shared with Faru, ‘Rhino’, which has either a double bed or twin beds and, apart from being slightly larger, is identical to Kasa in terms of its amenities. Lastly, Tembo (‘Elephant’) occupies 22 square meters and is situated in the south wing on the ground floor. This room too may be configured as a double or a twin, and it has its own en-suite shower room. All rooms boast ocean views and exquisite furnishings nodding to the bird or animal theme!

ACTIVITIES AT MAWIMBI VILLA:

  • Due to its seaside setting, Mawimbi is perfect for some laidback beach time. Ushongo offers safe swimming in its sparkling waters, while the white sands are wonderful for sunbathing and building sandcastles!
  • However, if you feel like getting active, you can enjoy all sorts of watersports – scuba diving, kayaking, big game fishing, and snorkeling among the colorful reefs off a very accessible sand atoll.
  • Trips aboard a traditional dhow are available for exploring the waters and beaches around the coast.
  • Depending on the timing of your visit, you might be lucky enough to witness baby turtles hatching on one of East Tanzania’s nesting sites!
  • Staff at the villa are happy to arrange excursions farther afield. For example, you could check out the idyllic island of Zanzibar, while Saadani National Park – 50 kilometers from Mawimbi – has a wealth of wildlife such as lion, elephant, giraffe, and hippo!
  • Many of the country’s other big safari areas may be visited too, including the Serengeti, the national parks of Tarangire and Ruaha, and the Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous).
  • Closer to the villa, village visits are possible – this is an exciting opportunity to get to know the people of the east coast of Tanzania.
