Although the lodge has had a chequered past with complaints about the food and service, we expect it to be very different now after its extensive refurbishment. That being said, we have not been able to visit it recently and so we are hesitant to rely on a service that we haven't experienced ourselves.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Kono Kono is situated on Michamvi Bay on the south-east coast of Zanzibar.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
Its 24 villas nestle in low forest above Michamvi Beach. An attractive path lined with bougainvillea leads from reception, past the villas down to the beach below. There are three categories of villa – sea view villas, garden view villas and family villas. They are open plan, with a bedroom, sitting room, bathroom, dressing room and an outside terrace with plunge pool. They are a mix of traditional and colonial – with thatched roofs, hand-carved furniture and beautiful fabrics.
Other facilities include a beach restaurant with a wonderful panoramic view of Michamvi Bay, a beach bar, jungle spa and a communal swimming pool.
This is one of the most beautiful beaches in Zanzibar with powder white sand to swim in by day, and fabulous sunsets in the evening. This is a remote and peaceful destination. The grounds are 5 hectares of lush, natural surroundings and the beach is virtually deserted. Better still, the entire area has been designated a conservation area so the tranquillity cannot be spoilt by more buildings.
