"Hunter’s Country House is a tranquil and wonderfully located hotel at the heart of the Garden Route. A hidden gem with beautiful surroundings where you can see a variety of tropical birds and monkeys playing in the garden. I would highly recommend this place – and with rooms being super-cosy and private, this place is suitable for either families or couples."

OVERVIEW:

Set in gorgeous gardens, Hunter’s offers a peaceful base from which to explore this stretch of the Garden Route. With a variety of accommodation options, the property is suitable for most types of traveler. The estate is owned by Craig and Jill Hunter, and it includes sister lodge Tsala Treetop.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Hunter’s Country House is situated on a private estate, 10 kilometers west of Plettenberg Bay and about 24 kilometers east of Knysna. Hunter’s is easily accessed from both Plettenberg Bay and Knysna, along the N2 highway. The site is laid with neat brick roads and paths, and the main lodge is a timber, stone, and thatch construction, in the traditional safari style!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT HUNTER'S COUNTRY HOUSE:

Inside, there are a number of small yet characterful lounges and a library, all featuring comfortable armchairs and sofas, Persian rugs, and cozy fireplaces, under exposed beams. The indoor dining area, known as Manor House, is also open-ceilinged and not short of character too, with chessboard-style floor tiles, chandeliers, and high-backed chairs. A further dining space, within a conservatory, is a little less formal, though not without elegance! There are several outside seating and dining areas; and Zinzi restaurant, which serves both Hunter’s and Tsala Treetop, is about 500 meters from the lodge. Adjoining the lodge is a children’s play room called Cubs Corner – here, kids aged up to 6 years can enjoy an assortment of toys and games. Older children and teenagers have their own lounge, where they can watch DVDs and play darts. The grounds of Hunter’s are also perfect for playtime, for young and mature travelers alike! There are ample lawns surrounded by expertly landscaped gardens. The estate is bordered by forest, and we love the spacious swimming pool, flanked by sunloungers. This is a fabulous setting in which to relax and unwind! And business guests benefit from first-rate conference venues and state-of-the-art equipment – please contact us for further details.

Guest accommodation at Hunter’s consists of 23 suites, in three categories – Garden Suite, Deluxe Pool Suite, and Family Suite. All options include air conditioning, a fireplace, international adaptors, a tea-and-coffee station, a fully stocked mini-bar, a safe, complimentary bathrobes, slippers, toiletries, and a hairdryer in the en-suite. Each Garden Suite has a cozy thatch roof and is designed for couples, merging past and present in its décor to sophisticated effect. The total floor space of this option is 45 square meters, including a lovely private patio adjacent to the fragrant grounds. At 85 square meters, the Deluxe Pool suite is larger – each contains a separate lounge and dining area featuring flatscreen television. There is also a dressing room. This type of suite has French doors onto a patio with a private pool! It is perfect for couples hoping for a little extra privacy. Finally, each Family Suite has two spacious bedrooms and a generous patio with sunloungers. And the bathroom has the added bonus of a bidet!

Hunter’s is well-positioned for visitors to enjoy all sorts of experiences. You can take trips to an amazing range of attractions – Birds of Eden, Monkeyland, and the towns of Plettenberg Bay and Knysna for fascinating cultural tours.

  • The seas off the coast of Plett are outstanding for ocean safari, featuring whales, sharks, seals, and dolphins – you can even swim with the seals! Boat trips take you along the wonderful waterways of the Garden Route, while yacht cruises sweep you through the dramatic rocks known as the Knysna Heads.
