Praslin is the second largest island of the Seychelles, with a surface area of 38km2 and population of approximately 6,500. It is situated 44km north-east of Mahé.

Praslin is a very popular destination due to its vast tracts of palm forest yielding to sugar-soft sands and crystal-clear seas. The beaches are perfect both for relaxation and for a range of watersports – scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and many more! Praslin has a nature park too, as well as a museum, galleries and gardens. It really is an all-rounder, with plenty to keep everyone occupied. The island also has a colorful history of use as a pirates’ lair and a stowaway for Arab merchants. Today, it is a thriving vacation destination, esteemed not only for its lush tropical forests but also for its beautiful beaches with their soft white sands and sparkling turquoise waters.

The history of Praslin

Explorer Lazare Picault named the island Isle de Palmes in 1744, due to its vast tracts of palm forest. It was named Praslin in 1768, to honor officer and diplomat César Gabriel de Choiseul, duke of Praslin.

Beaches on Praslin

On Praslin, we love Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette. Situated on the north-western coast of the island, Anse Lazio is one of the highest-rated beaches on the Seychelles. It is considered particularly fantastic for families due to its shallow and tranquil waters, while keen swimmers and snorkelers describe it as idyllic! Big boulders and verdant vegetation frame a stretch of sand glinting silver in the sun – and there is ample privacy. Even quieter, is Anse Georgette, also in the north-west. This beach lies in the grounds of Constance Lémuria. The resort seeks to limit visitor numbers to maintain a pristine environment, but if you take the time to book a trip the effort is well worth while – simply put, it’s a dream destination!

Activities

There is plenty to see and do on Praslin. Both L’Archipel and Constance Lémuria are able to offer a full menu of watersports – for example, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing, fishing. Constance Lémuria boasts the only golf course in the whole of the Seychelles! Guests may also enjoy visiting the famous beaches Grand Anse and Anse Volbert. La Vallée de Mai, a nature park home to coco de mer (sea coconut) palms is popular too – and the island has a museum, galleries and gardens.

Praslin is well placed for travelers to take a trip to neighboring islands. Ferries set off regularly to Mahé, a journey of 50–60 minutes, and to La Digue, less than half an hour away. And return flights to Mahé are available too. We think of Praslin as a smaller version of Mahé. Whether you opt to stay on the main island or its smaller neighbor, you are guaranteed a fabulous vacation!
