Fregate Island was named by Lazare Picault in 1744, for its vast numbers of frigatebirds. Today the island remains a haven for birdlife and many other species, due to its ongoing interests in conservation.

OVERVIEW:

Fregate Island Private is one dream destination. With its superb location, luxury accommodation, exciting assortment of activities and exceptional service, it really is a piece of paradise. Very highly recommended! Recently Fregate became a member of the Oetker Collection, as one in a portfolio of Masterpiece Hotels. The principal aim of this Collection is ‘to exceed our guests’ expectations’ – so any guest at Fregate is in for a treat! Food is sourced from the island – fruits, vegetables and herbs grown in the gardens, fish caught from the sea. Guests are permitted to dine wherever they wish, whether down on the beaches, high up in the Treehouse setting of ancient banyan trees, or simply in the restaurant or private residence. And Rock Spa is the perfect place to relax, with its Ayurvedic therapies.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Fregate Island Private is located on its own island, 55km east of Mahé.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT FREGATE PRIVATE ISLAND:

Fregate House is the central area here, a beautiful building constructed as far as possible from natural materials. Within, there is Reception, the boutique, library, main restaurant and cellar. In the grounds of the House is Pirates Bar (a beach hut), then two communal swimming pools overlooking the white sands and sapphire waters of the bay. The resort’s museum is set up in Plantation House, home of the former owner. This is an intriguing structure that recalls colonial times while showcasing the island’s flora and fauna, and many interesting discoveries. There is also a charming Créole chapel, open for services.

Accommodation consists of 16 luxury villas, plus Banyan Hill Estate comprising three separate villas situated on a private peninsula. Of the 16 villas, three types are available – residence, twin residence and spa residence. All are spaced along the north coastline, adjacent to spectacular beaches and lofty palms. Built from indigenous mahogany, each includes its own Jacuzzi and infinity pool, plus terrace, daybed, dining pavilion, and en-suite facilities featuring outdoor shower. The accommodation is fully air-conditioned and guests have the use of a private island buggy too. The Estate is billed as ‘your ultimate tropical home’, with its total of five buildings overlooking much of the island, array of staff, and a plethora of other attractions – just get in touch for more details!

ACTIVITIES AT FREGATE ISLAND PRIVATE:

Fregate offers a wide range of activities.

  • Watersports are available from its Yacht Club and Dive Centre – sailing, surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, waterskiing, and powerboat day trips.
  • Inland, there is swimming, tennis, mountain hiking and biking, and nature walks with the island’s conservationists.
  • Fregate boasts no fewer than seven brilliant beaches, one of which has been voted ‘The World’s Best Beach’ by The Times! And the Kids Club has all sorts of things to do – banana boating and treasure hunting, in addition to the special Castaway Trail that is open only to children and introduces them to giant tortoises and all the other wonderful wildlife here.
