The quality of guiding from Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is truly first rate and the same is true of service at the Lodge. The gardens of the Lodge yield plenty of herbs and vegetables, so all dishes are fresh and tasty. Guests can opt to dine indoors or outdoors, at separate tables.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is situated in the Skeleton Coast North area of Northwest Namibia, hidden away in the remote Purros Valley.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
In the main area, visitors are greeted by a collection of intriguing open-sided buildings. These are linked by a simple wooden walkway, which adds a traditional feel. Central to it all is a spacious swimming pool, where you can go for a morning swim or take a dip in the afternoon to cool off! Around the swimming pool is a large terrace, with covered areas to provide some welcome shade. The Lodge also has two dining rooms and a traditional Namibian boma. The boma offers a log fire for guests to enjoy a little warmth while dining under the stars. Come back inside and you can relax in comfort in one of the lounge rooms – alternatively, pick up a book to read during your stay from the well-stocked library on site.
The guest accommodation at Okahirongo Elephant Lodge comprises seven lavish chalets and one presidential suite, all built using local stone. The rooms are thoughtfully decorated, with local carvings and artwork adorning the walls to create a real Namibian welcome for guests! Fans are available in every room and mosquito nets provide a safety net from the niggling biters that can annoy the best of us during the night! The en-suite bathrooms are luxurious, featuring twin washbasins, an indoor shower, a bathtub, and even an outdoor shower so you can wash with nature by your side every morning! The bathrooms overlook the surrounding area and it is a real treat to lie back in the bubbles and gaze at the view. Each chalet has its own veranda, where you can recline on a queen-sized sunlounger and sip on a cocktail, or sleep under the stars at night. The extravagant Presidential Suite boasts two double bedrooms as well as a private lounge area, a veranda, and even a private gazebo!
Okahirongo Elephant Lodge provides an excellent assortment of activities – and the friendly and courteous staff are happy to help book you onto trips and offer advice based on your budget and interests. The big seller in this area is seeing the desert-adapted elephant. You can do this with a guide, who can take you on a day trip to track these majestic creatures, as well as tracking lion. Game drives can be taken too, with experienced guides with you during the day as well as at night-time. There are also hiking excursions into the Hoarusib River Valley and desert walks offering amazing opportunities to see the real Namibia and take some fantastic photos. For something a little bit different, guests can visit the nearby Himba village for a spot of traditional dancing and singing, or travel out to the salt-water springs and magical rock formations at Ogams. There is a lot to choose from here!
