"Hoanib Valley is a comfortable luxury tented camp that showcases the stark beauty of this untouched wilderness. Wildlife is not prolific, but the camp does offer a base from which to go in search of the desert-adapted wildlife found in this area, as well as learning more about the Herero people and the ground-breaking giraffe conservation that goes on in this remote corner of the country."

OVERVIEW:

Hoanib Valley Camp is owned and operated by Natural Selection, a company of experts offering characterful safaris in Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. Relatively new to the safari scene, already Natural Selection’s properties are receiving first-rate feedback! The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, most activities, a laundry service, and Wi-Fi, and the camp is open throughout the year.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Located in the spectacular Hoanib Valley, the camp can be accessed via light-aircraft flight from Windhoek. As an alternative, road transfers are available from Namibia’s capital (8 hours) or Swakopmund (7 hours), in an air-conditioned vehicle driven by a member of the camp’s team of staff. Self-drivers can park at Fort Sesfontein and enjoy the final part of the journey on a game drive, also provided by a staff member! The property rests on the banks of the River Obias, with a rugged mountain backdrop.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT HOANIB VALLEY CAMP:

Guest accommodation here consists of just six tents – five for a maximum of two adults, and one for a family of up to two adults and two children. Each canvas tent is mounted on a deck constructed from a timber, bamboo, and 70 per cent recycled-material composite. There’s comfy furniture on the deck, fantastic for relaxing and marveling at the scenery! Inside, local materials have been used to create a style completely in keeping with the camp’s natural surroundings. As well as the comfy beds, the tents contain bedside tables and lighting, a seating area, snug rugs on the wooden floor, wildlife artwork, and en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, washbasin, and indoor and outdoor showers.

Hoanib Valley Camp’s communal lounge, dining room, and bar are found in a spacious mess tent, also atop a deck made partially from recycled materials. The lounge area contains sofas, armchairs, and poufs around a coffee table, set with a few intriguing ornaments. In the dining area, two large tables and chairs supply the venue for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, all included in the price of your stay. There’s a chic little bar too, and guests can also eat and drink on the camp’s deck. Finally, a classic fire-pit, flanked by a semi-circle of campaign chairs, is the perfect place for socializing with your fellow travelers and swapping stories of your experiences on safari!

ACTIVITIES AT HOANIB VALLEY CAMP:

The camp provides an exhilarating range of activities!

  • Game drives are a great opportunity to see the wildlife of Hoanib and, on request, Skeleton Coast National Park. The area’s sprawling sandy plains, endless dunes, and majestic mountains are home to a fine assortment of mammals, including desert-adapted lion, leopard, hyenas, jackals, rhino, elephant, giraffe, oryx, kudu, and springbok.
  • There are a number of bird highlights too, such as ostrich, Verreaux’s eagle, Monteiro’s hornbill, and Rüppell’s bustard. The camp’s guided nature walks are ideal for keen birders and anyone interested in plants and insects. Rhino tracking is available too! You can also spend time with the local Himba and Herero peoples, to find out about their lives in this beautiful yet not entirely hospitable part of the world.
  • Hoanib Valley Camp has links with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation as well – in fact, the property is a joint venture between the foundation and local communities. Famous as the only Africa-wide foundation of its kind in the world, the organization is well worth a visit. You can look around the field base and talk with the lead research team. And at extra cost, you can meet the giraffes!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
