Service, especially in terms of the activities on offer, is top notch at Camp Kipwe. Mealtimes are fixed, which might not suit all visitors, but the food on offer is simple and delicious. The staff seem to be one big happy family, which really comes across to guests and makes everyone feel very welcome. Most are local Damara people from the surrounding villages – they are happy to tell stories and give you a feel for what the area is really like. All children are accepted at camp – and kids love the igloos!
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Located in the Twyfelfontein Conservancy in Damaraland, Western Namibia, Camp Kipwe offers rustic and traditional accommodation.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT CAMP KIPWE:
The comfy lounge is filled with sofas for you to cuddle up with your loved ones – some seating can be found on a balcony, so you can look up at the stars. The local birdlife can often be found swooping down for a sip of the water trickling down the rocks – an amazing photo opp! The majority of the dining here takes place in an open-fronted room with a balcony. A small indoor dining area is used in winter – this has an open kitchen where guests are wowed by the smells and flames from the grill! There is also a small curio shop for all those little mementos to take home for family and friends. Outside the main building is the plunge pool, where you can take a dip in the ice-cool waters and then rest up in the shade on one of the sunloungers, keeping an eye on the brightly coloured lizards scampering around the sheltered space. Just behind the camp is the real gem of your stay, with a small path leading guests up through the boulders and rocky climbs to a spectacular viewpoint. Up here you can watch the sunset with some drinks brought up from the bar, relax, and know that all is good with life!
From certain angles Camp Kipwe looks like the set of a sci-fi film, with nine eccentric and eco-friendly bungalows in the shape of igloos for you to choose from. The design keeps temperatures cooler, in what can be a struggling heat in the middle of the Namibian day! It also allows you to imagine what it would be like to be a native, due to the natural, earthy feel to each building. Humble furnishings adorn each bedroom, with bedside tables and lamps, cushions, and deckchairs on a shaded veranda where it is great to unwind. Each room includes an open-air en-suite bathroom, so you can cleanse under the light of stars. The quirky design of the bathrooms delivers a space between rocks, while the toilet is situated behind a boulder. It really is innovatively styled! In every room visitors have access to mosquito repellent, a safe, fans and, in case of emergency, an air horn to warn staff you are in danger – although this would only be required in extreme circumstances!
ACTIVITIES AT CAMP KIPWE:
Guests at Camp Kipwe adore the simple and natural feel of the property, but the wow factor comes with the activities available! The camp is well located should you wish to head off and explore Damaraland on your own – if not, there is quite an extensive range of things to do throughout the camp itself.
- Head out to see the majestic elephant on a morning drive… explore the conservancy with a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide… or even arrange a balloon safari to see the game from above and the stunning landscape of the area for miles in every direction!
- Hiking is well advised due to the beautiful landscape of the Huab Valley. We also recommend a trip to Twyfelfontein, which, as Namibia’s first World Heritage Site, provides the opportunity for you to see what the country was like in olden times!
- Here there is an incredible selection of rock art and geological sites. All in all, there is an amazing mix of options, which could keep you busy for days on end!
