OVERVIEW:
Although Benguerra Lodge is the oldest lodge in the area, it is a wonderfully characterful old lodge that has long been one of our Bazaruto favorites. The area is famous for its fabulous white beaches, excellent fishing and first-class scuba diving and snorkeling. It was declared a National Park in 1971.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Just over an hour’s flight from Johannesburg, the island is approximately 11 km by 5.5 km.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT BENGUERRA ISLAND:
The 13 rooms are located along the beach in well-kept gardens that have had three decades to develop into the most charming grounds of any southern Mozambique lodge. There are two categories of rooms – the Casitas and the Cabanas. The former are the finer, each with its own plunge pool on a private deck, whereas the Cabanas are more economical options that offer great value for a lodge of this quality. There is also a two-bedroom villa with its own swimming pool on the wooden deck outside. There is a large lounge, a restaurant serving traditional Mozambiquan cuisine, and a fabulous bar made from an old dhow sailing boat. There is also a good-sized pool and a small spa.
ACTIVITIES AT BENGUERRA ISLAND:
- Not only is Benguerra known for its fantastic diving and snorkeling, but fishing here is regarded as some of the best deep sea fly fishing in the world.
- Other activities include 4x4 drives across the island, dhow cruises, sea kayaking, catamaran cruises, village visits, island walks and birdwatching (the island is home to 140 species of bird).
